Toddlers: 24 Months+

Is your toddler wiped out??

DD has been exhausted for a couple days. Last night she didn't sleep well so it makes sense she would be sleepy today. She had a fever yesterday but it seems to have broken. She is drinking plenty of liquids but appetite is way down. Anyone else experiencing this? Debating on going to the dr since she doesn't have a fever and any other symptoms except for being sleepy and a little fussy.

  • We're just coming out of that phase. Part of it she wasn't feeling well (I think hers was a combo of random kid crud and back teeth). Part of it was she decided to disrupt her whole sleep routine.

I didn't take mine to the dr. She wasn't eating much but it was passable, drinking a ton still, Tylenol took the fever down and playing mostly okay, I figured the Dr. wasn't going to do much for me anyways.

It took two weeks and some sleep routine changes, but she's coming around again.

  • Thanks so much! I was thinking it might be back teeth as well. I had some ladies getting on my case for not taking her in but she doesn't seem that ill to me. Not dr worthy at least!

I wouldn't worry. I think people tend to overreact about the dr. They can't make everything better. Of course if I know it's an ear infection or the like I take her, but general kid crud, whatever. I mean what's the dr. going to do with a kid that isn't dehydrated, is still eating, not screaming in pain but just isn't herself other than send me home and tell me to "wait it out."

I use myself as a guideline and stop and think, "If I was going through what my kid was, would I go to the dr.?" It puts all the kid stuff in perspective.

I think that's a good approach to seeing the doctor.  In situations like that you really have to factor in the possibility that you may come into contact with a seriously sick person and bring home something far worse than whatever you are dealing with.  Not saying certain things don't warrant a sick visit, but I try my best to make sure we really need to go first.
  • To OP, I don't think your daughter's symptoms warrent a dr. visit either.

I'm a teacher.  Many kids have been out ill lately.  I do think mild flus and colds are spreading more as people are staying inside more and thus coming in closer contact with each other than in warmer months.

I saw the subject of this post and immediately thought YES!!!!!  DD (2 yrs. old)  has been asking to get into her jammies and go to bed a good half hour/45 minutes before her normal bedtime.  She's clearly exhausted, but says she doesn't feel ill. DH and I think it's the additional darkness that's causing her to be tired.

  • Agree with PP's, I wouldn't take her in.  Just keep an eye on her for any other symptoms.  Time changes, teething and growth spurts can all make a child want to sleep earlier or more.
