I bought 500 pieces, plus I hand out whatever DS1 brought home from DC and some of whatever he collects tonight. (Tacky?? Maybe, but I don't need all the candy in the house!)
We trick or treat on the 30th here. DS dumped his candy bucket into our treat bowl before we left last night. LOL
I bought about 140 pieces of candy (M&Ms & Snickers). DH stayed home, said we had about 12 kids at our door. 12. We were mobbed with other groups of kids everywhere we went, but apparently they stayed off our street. Sigh.
DH is convinced we're going to get egged since I didn't buy candy, but I hate having all that junk in our house. Plus kids like Glo Sticks right?
I haven't always given out candy. One year I gave out mini Play-Dohs, another year pencils. As much as they love candy, the kids we were out with last night got the most excited at the non-candy objects.
We bought the 150 piece CostCo bag. I think that should cover us. It will different for us this year, though, because we'll be going out early to take DS to a few houses so we won't open up for business until later. This is his first trick or treating so we both want to go with me but eventually one of us will probably man the house and other will take him out.
300 and 500 pieces is mind boggling to me! My brother used to buy that much; they lived in a great neighborhood for trick or treating. So great that kids came from other neighborhoods.
I got 100 glow sticks, plus the Candy DS gets from ToT, and whatever DD decides to give up to the Switch Witch. We're leaving a bowl out while we're out and then I'll probably keep the lights off since we'll be doing the bed time routine.

Our first Halloween in our house I just bought Twizzlers. I didn't know how many kids we'd have and I did not want to end up eating all the leftover chocolate (and I love Twizzlers and feel somewhat less guilty eating them). A couple days before Halloween I see DH scrougning around the cabinets and he looks up and says, "where's the chocolate?" I explained what I got and why and he goes, "well, if you want to be that house." I guess Twizzlers aren't the good stuff? Well, it turns out they aren't the good stuff. I did buy chocolate but by the end of the night, there were only Twizzlers left (I let kids pick themselves; I don't do that anymore), and a kid looks at me and says "Twizzlers? No thank you," and turns around and yells to whoever was behind him, "they only have Twizzlers." The next morning, I found some candy laying in the yard. It was the Twizzlers. I have never lived this down with my husband. LOL. We now crack up about it every Halloween. Were not going to be that house again.
But, glo sticks? If I was a kid, I'd think that was pretty cool!
Hardly any ... we didn't get a single trick or treater last year AND we're supposed to get severe storms tonight. Our immediate neighbors are mostly empty nesters and the neighborhood is really spread out (1 acre lots) so I'm not expecting too many people, if any.

I like the glow stick idea!! I am sure other parents will too
Not only do we live in a great neighborhood for ToTing, we also live in the "big" house community, so we get a lot of non-neighborhood kids. I love it, it's just a lot of candy!
I bought around 500 pieces of candy and then some extra bags of snacks in case I ran of out candy and then maybe half the normal number of kids showed up so I have a huge bowl of candy sitting on my dining room table. Ugh.
Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12
Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck. Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.
As to glow sticks, yes, kids love them and if you're the first house they get them from they are excited but if you're the 10th house they are getting them from then not so much because who needs 10 glow sticks that all aren't going to be glowing come morning? Candy/snacks/even something like playdoh will still be there in the morning.
When I was a kid we hated the houses that handed out popcorn balls, pennies or McDonalds certificates. Do they even sell those anymore? Am I dating myself with that?

I bought three bags (one candy, one candy-coated mini pretzels, one kettle corn) and then 75 mini comics. Two years ago, we were out of everything in 30 minutes. Last year, we got 3 kids. So who knows what will happen tonight.
Edit: And yes, the candy bag was at DH's insistence. I was just going to do the mini bags of pretzels/popcorn.

If it makes you feel better, I remember McDonald's certificates too! Do kids these days even know what "gift certificates" are? I'm assuming they expect gift cards?

We had Bible verses. I would have loved a McDonalds certificate!
I hope this doesn't hijack this post but did anyone see this news story? What an f'ing bitch! I would want to cry if I saw a child get this letter. Find a better way to express your opinion on this topic than humilating a child, potentially in front of his/her friends. How about you just don't open your door on Halloween at all? Hopefully neighbors know who she is and can bypass her house.
Bible verses? Geez, I wouldn't go back to that house.
And yes, I saw the story about the lady handing out the "your kid is fat" notes. People really need to get down off their high horses regarding obsesity. She doesn't think overweight children should be eating sugar? Fine, don't hand out candy then. The last thing those kids need is a lecture, trust me, they know they are overweight.

This is our first year in our neighborhood and I'm going to keep tally. Word from my neighbors is that you need to buy more than you can possibly imagine needing. I have 500 pieces and I'm not shy about giving from my daughter's bucket as well.
