A double-edged sword

An issue at work had me pretty riled up yesterday, and it got me thinking. What is one trait you have that is both positive and negative? For me, I throw myself fully into whatever I'm doing, so I'm very passionate about it, work hard, etc. But on the flip side, because I feel so invested, I can get pretty annoyed when others don't pull their weight or respond as I expect them to. This, I feel, often leads other people to think that I'm too emotional or volatile or whatever. And as much as that part isn't good, I feel like it shouldn't overshadow the positive side of being industrious and passionate.

Re: A double-edged sword

  • I'm a planner, it's great because I always have a plan and most things go pretty smoothly. It can be terribly dificult for me to adjust when things don't go to plan. This is the reason that I never had a birth plan, I think I would have been much more upset and emotional had I committed to wanting things to go one way and then have it not happen.

I am exactly like this too.  I wish I could "let things go" more but I get so fully vested and passionate I carry it around with me everywhere.

  • I'm really really really nice. I often end up being a doormat.

  • I'm super honest. Sometimes people don't like that. I'm also very thick-skinned and I don't always take the time to remember that other people aren't. If your work is shit, I make you redo it, and I suck at sugarcoating.

  • My compassion. The positive is that I am able to empathize with people, which most are able to do. The negative is that I worry about people with whom I have little or no connection, specifically children and animals.  I think my job is a large part of why I think this way.

  • I'm a person who has to follow her gut when it comes to everything especially people. I've been burned too many times not listening to my instincts about others so I've finally just put up a wall to some extent. If my first impression isn't good, I have a very hard time breaking it. Good and bad because I guess.

  • I never ask for help.

This is good bc I can work independently & I am a very good problem solver.

This is bad though bc sometimes I could have saved time if I had just asked for help right off the bat instead of taking time to figure things out myself.

That is totally me. I hate asking for help or input from anyone else.

This. I need to be more flexible and go with the flow and not upset if something is a few minutes off.
I had to learn this real quick when B was born. I was very scheduled and wanted to have a plan in place for the day/week/hour whatever. Well with a baby that doesn't exactly happen. Going with the flow was SO hard but I'm doing much better with it. I used to get frustrated when things wouldn't go "as planned." I had to tell myself to relax and let it go.
