What is your Unpopular Opinion?

Mine: I don't care about Halloween - at all. We didn't even buy DS a costume until last night. For me, it's about the candy and that's about it. Despite the fact that my work is going all out - I didn't even bother to dress up in the slightest today.

I'm with you on Halloween! I'm excited to pass out candy only because the kids get so excited, but I could skip it and be ok.

I don't understand the concept of not vaccinating your child. Why would you NOT want your child to get a certain illness?

Last year I did not get my son a flu shot and when he got the flu for the second time and developed double pneumonia and didn't have enough strength to get out of bed I felt like the worst mother in the world, because it's my job to make sure he's protected.

I don't understand the concept of not vaccinating your child. Why would you NOT want your child to get a certain illness? I don't understand the concept of vaccinating a 1 day old baby for Hep B. Is my infant going to be having sex or shooting heroin in the first years of life? Doubtful.

If you want vaccinate your child, more power to you. But I will be very careful with what is injected into my infant.

I think Obama care is actually going to be a GOOD thing for my family. I am on an individual insurance plan that does not have a maternity policy, nor can I get on one before the new healthcare system goes into effect. (Trust me, I have tried - and well before I became pregnant!!!) I already pay a small fortune for a healthy family of 3 to have ok coverage, so really, I don't see it getting much worse, at least for us. And, while I realize it is not the best direction for our country as a whole, I may be one of the few who will actually benefit.

Quick question regarding this - I see this answer a lot, and I know people who don't vax. Not my bag, but there choice. I don't love it, but again, not for me to make other peoples' decisions.

My problem is this - for people who state the concern about what is injected into their bodies and their children's bodies - do you follow this into other areas of your lives? Unless you are eating no fast food, no processed food, no HFCS, no genetically modified foods, no dyes, no animal products at all, going completely organic, not eating out of any plastic containers, not using hair products, makeup, soap, detergent, etc., then it's all just a spectrum of chemicals we live with on a daily basis. Only difference being that many vaccines have a potential benefit and some of those are just indulgences that have known harms and no benefits.

I understand the vax argument on both sides (mostly), and I know which side I fall on. I can get behind no vaxing for some things, but many of them, I just don't understand the benefit vs. harm analysis, especially when I see those people making plenty of other choices that negate their original anti-vax arguments.

Polio has been pretty much eradicated in the US. I may or may not give my child the MMR vaccine. I have not decided on that one yet.

I have nothing against delaying them. We actually did that with both my sons. My second son we delayed until he was over a year old, because at the time my mom was dying of cancer and going through chemo. My pediatrician thought this would be best at the time for my moms sake just in case and it wouldn't effect my son in any way.

It's called herd immunity. Google that. And some kids, like mine, have to get vaxed on an adjusted schedule because they have a special condition. And if my kid gets sick because you're too lazy to take care of yours, that's gonna really piss me off.

I take back my previous comment this is the worst logic ever. We live in an world were people from every come and go, don't think because something is not here now it is never coming back.

@saltypearl - My company does the same thing! UW is the only charity that we are allowed to support (in the office and amongst our functional teams). They spend a crazy amount of money encouraging people to donate and I do not agree with so much of UW. I choose not to donate and always feel as though my manager knows and judges me for it. I donate to other charities throughout the year where I know my $/donations will truly be felt.

Edit: I am not saying UW is not a good organization. It's a personal choice for me to not donate. I know that they DO a lot of good in communities.

DH is a big sports fan. I care once in a while - I just don't have the energy for it either

And others can't get certain vaccines ever because of bad reactions or allergies to the vaccine. So that tiny percentage of kids that are at risk for certain things because of no fault of their own, are now MORE at risk because OMG VACCINES!

I was so thrilled when Oregon passed their law mandating people actually talk to educated professionals before being allowed to opt out of vaccines. So many people with flawed reasoning and their only research is a bunch of scare tactics. I hope soon the rest of the US and elsewhere follows suite.

There is a large community of people who don't vaccinate for religious reasons near where I live. An epidemic goes trough the community one or twice every five years and it is tragic. Because their community is active in our city we don't have the added protection of herd immunity, and DH and I are extra diligent in keeping our vaccinations up-to-date. Same goes for LO when he or she gets here.

Definitely delay.. I'm not going to give my child every vaccination under the sun just because. Vaccinations for chicken pox or strep throat? Definitely not. The more serious disease, yes, possibly but I just can't wrap my head around some of the things they want me to give my child the first years of life. Like I said, if I do it will be minimal and it will be for the most serious of diseases.

And it's not about being lazy @flerlgirl

I am very on the fence about it and flaming me about it is definitely not going to change my mind.

Also, on the HBV thing, your kid may not be having sex, but I be they fall down once or twice. And I would really hope when they do, they don't come into contact with some other kid whose parents decided not to get them vaccinated who was bit by a kid that also wasn't vaccinated and has hbv. See how this works? Your kid can fall on the playground and get hbv. He doesn't have to have sex or do heroin. A large percentage of hbv cases are contracted during childhood. Please do some actual research before just following along with dangerous fads.

Fine; I don't really care what it's about. I care about the fact that people like you put my child at risk. And I have already watched him die three times so you can understand why I don't want to go for a fourth.

I hope a less than 2 month old baby, who isn't old enough for the vax yet, doesn't come in contact with your child who has whooping cough. Not a huge deal for your child, but deadly for the baby. This happened to a friend of mine a few years ago and it was devastating. It's just one of a bunch of diseases on the rise again from people not vaccinating their kids. It's your choice, your kid, but think of the effects it can have on other's children, as well.

Uhhh it's been MOSTLY eradicated in the US but immigrants come here all the time from places where polio is still a threat (guess why? because they don't vaccinate since they aren't as fortunate as we are to have that opportunity) and even if they don't have the symptoms, they can still carry it. We don't live in a bubble, people.

@supgabs - The MMR vaccine does not contain aluminium, thimerosal or mercury. I would highly suggest doing credible scientific research before jumping to conclusions.
