Stay at Home Moms

What would you say...unexpected retirement.

At my Dad's work on Monday there was talk about not renewing contract worker's contracts...my Dad's last day of work is TODAY! Surprise! He is of age to retire, but wasn't planning on retiring or going out this way.  I feel really bad for him and my Mom.  He is very skilled in one area and probably won't be going out to look for a new job, just be done.  My siblings and I are going together to get a GC for a local restaurant so he and my Mom can go out and celebrate, but what do you say?  Congratulations on your retirement doesn't really sound appropriate in this case.  Any suggestions?

Anyone can be cool, but awesome takes practice!

  • Encourage him to watch the AM traffic report and laugh? That helped my SAHM transition.

  • Give him a bottle of his favorite drink and a pack of new underwear so he can sit in his underwear and get drunk.  That's my retirement plan.
  • Yeah, I'd say congratulations! He's spent a lifetime having to work hard for his family and now he's finally DONE! I'm sure it's a shock to get forced into it so suddenly, and there's more ideal ways to go than that, but it totally is a really exciting thing! He's probably experiencing a crazy amount of different emotions right now... anger, disappointment, confusion, excitement, etc... so I'd push him towards the positive emotions and downplay the negative ones. Speak positively about what he can do going forward and how great it will be to no longer have to work, but to volunteer for things he's passionate about, pursue hobbies, etc.
