Pregnant after 35

SO done with WORKING! Anyone else?

I am 32 weeks pregnant, exhausted, sick (cold for over a week), managing gestational diabetes, seeing a physical therapist once a week for pelvic/si pain, and I am DONE wanting to work.

I was planning to work up until week 37 or 38, but I would like to stop next week. Luckily, I work part-time from home (which I will continue), and part-time as a tutor outside the home (this is what I want to quit). I used to love tutoring kids, but I just have no patience for them right now, and tutoring takes place when I normally need to be eating my meals, taking my blood sugar, etc. I am wiped out and have no energy to motivate rich kids to do their homework, let alone scrunch myself into and out of my tiny Civic, climb stairs, be around kids who are sneezy and messy half the time, and be in other people's homes when my body just feels horrible.

I feel so selfish for wanting to take basically 7-8 weeks off before having my child, but I also feel like this is my last chance to have some time away from kids! I would still be working part-time from home as well as working on my novel (I'm a writer as well).

Is it terrible to want to get away from my job so much? I used to love it, and now I just loathe it! I just want some time to myself, as I've worked a lot throughout this pregnancy with my half-time home job, and half-time tutoring job. Does anyone else feel like this?

  • Don't be so hard on yourself. I have not worked a single day of my pregnancy, it has been very hard on my otherwise healthy 40 year old body. There is no reason to beat yourself up over wanting to take care of you and baby. Take the time you need and enjoy some relaxation while you can. Third tri just gets harder, there's no reason to push yourself. And I think we all pretty much agree there are plenty of times when we have short fuses/no patience/ and feel irritated with anyone and everyone. It's normal. I hope you get over your cold and feel better soon, sorry you've been sick. Hugs.

  • I will be 37 weeks tomorrow and am still working full time.  I am so over it you have no idea.  Oh and I still have 2 more weeks to go work wise.  My due date is 11/21 and my last day of work is 11/15.  I just switched jobs last year and left behind 89 sick days that I couldn't bring with me so I have to work as long as possible to get paid after the baby is born.  I also have an almost 2 year old so I can't even relax once I am home from work.  I get it, I totally do!

@Geeps2 I so want to give you a creepy internet hug right now. Respect to all the women working all the way through their pregnancy. I don't know how you do it.

  • Thanks to everyone for the support. I do not know how women manage to work full-time up until the very end. We need better benefits in the U.S.! Especially for us oldies....ha ha. Thought I was young and vibrant til I got pregnant! So obvious to me now that I'm not 25 anymore...
  • I'm still working full time and my due date is in 12 days.  I'm completely exhausted all the time and am growing more and more crabby.  I am a purchasing manager, so I have vendors stopping by all the time or calling wanting to talk to me and the last thing I want to do it actually have to talk to anyone.  I wish I could go ahead and take off, but considering I could be two weeks late, that would mean I wouldn't work, or get paid, for a month, so it isn't really a possibility.  So yes, I understand exactly where you are coming from.  On the other hand, for me, I know if I wasn't working, I would be so bored.  It would be nice to know when the baby will be here for sure, I'd like to have a day or two off to relax and finish up some final things, but she isn't talking.  Good luck!
  • I'm almost 30 weeks and I wish I could quit working!!

  • I am fortunate to be able to work from home and plan to work until 11/22 (I'm due 11/20) unless LO comes earlier.  I'll stop working at 11/22 as they will not let me go past 41w.   I take great pride in my work but as I get closer and closer to the end, I'm checking out little by little.  I just can't be bothered to care about projects that start now but go through while I'm out.  Just. Can't. Care.

  • Agreed! I'm only at 10 weeks and wish I was not working! It's hard to concentrate and be engaged!
  • I'm just 4w and am so busy with my thoughts and reading up on what to expect, what to avoid, etc, that I can't stay focused at work. Hoping it will get better once I feel like I'm really pregnant and others know. In the meantime it's nice to have an office door I can close while catching up on posts!
  • I can totally relate!! I am 34 weeks and so wish I could be off. But like others, I must work to bank vacation and sick time for maternity leave.  My hardest times are getting up in the morning and getting ready. Then about 2PM I just hit a wall. Not to mention my lack of patience and mouth filter.  Some days are better than others. Thank God I have very supportive co-workers and boss. I can work from home some, but curse the feminist movement that wanted to work outside of the home. LOL!  Seriously, though I might work from home more as my due date (12/18) gets closer. But I have a while to go.

  • I'm with you, I have 2 days left, original plan was to work half a week next week but when OB talked induction at 39 weeks, I modified my leave. I am ready to be done working... I like to stay busy and engaged but it's hard when you have handed off most of your work load already. I am so uncomfortable. Ready for LO to arrive so my tummy will have some relief.
  • I am only 13 wks and have been over my job for like the whole time! It's hard to focus, stay awake, and just care in general. Good luck!
  • Absolutely. I'm 33 weeks with my 3rd pg, work full time & have 5 yr old & 2 yr old boys to take care of afterwards. DH is a firefighter so I'm on my own a lot & I'm exhausted!! I feel completely overwhelmed with the holidays coming up...trying to find time to get gifts & all that plus my house is a constant disaster. I just try to get from weekend to weekend b/c at least I don't have to get up as early & can take a nap when my kids do!

  • Oh me too! I'm 32 weeks today and am suddenly very uncomfortable. I am working until the end of November, then DH and I are moving to Raleigh. I'm so glad I don't have to work the last month and a half or less until all arrives. Right now though I live in Chicago and have to walk to the train, ride standing up if no one gives up a seat, then walk all around downtown. It's cold and wet and I'm just over it! LOL

  • I am 9weeks 4 days, OMG I never thought I would say I wish I did not have to work.  I am a teacher, 2nd grade.  I drive an hour to work so my days are already 10-12 hrs long.  I so cant wait for this week to be over with, then work 2 days then off for 5 for Thanksgiving.   Then all I need to do is have a few weeks then 2 weeks off over the winter break!!!

I can do it, I can do it!!!  I wonder if this would be easier if I was almost 30 instead of almost 40??? lol
