NT Scan 12 wks=too soon for sex determination

I will be doing my NT scan next week and I know some people were told their possible sex during their NT scans. So, I wanted to figure out what I might be seeing. Here is a great article with pictures how difficult it is to determine the sex of the baby this early: https://www.baby2see.com/gender/external_genitals.html

Just an FYI...

Re: NT Scan 12 wks=too soon for sex determination

  • I went last week and they told us the possible sex.... I almost wish they wouldn't have. I saw this article beforehand. Their "educated guess" was opposite of what I was thinking the whole time(would be totally happy either way) ... Honestly I just think it is soo hard to tell I keep looking at my ultrasound and what they refer to as "the angle of the dangle"...I'm now just curious what they will say at 20 weeks! Hoping for a great visit for you next week!

  • Angle of the dangle is why you see so many couples who expect to have boys get girls instead!

  • I thought people were finding out the sex of the baby during the NT test through the bloodwork they are having done not the actual ultrasound. Not sure, but I could have misunderstood.
  • @deanna1313 mine and a few others was based on what dr and/or ultrasound tech's opinion.

@andrew's wifey ... Exactly! When you first look at ours you would think (with no medical training) BOY but our "educated guess" given to us was girl. Like I said we are thrilled either way but I can see how it could be confusing/misunderstood very easily
  • @GRC6713 gotcha! I was thinking " why haven't I heard about this blood work determining sex" obviously I misunderstood. Lol
  • @deanna1313 I would love to find out from bloodwork... I'm dying to shop!!! Haha! :)
  • My tech said before 13 weeks she wouldn't even try and guess. I do have a friend who was told 80% boy at 12 weeks and found out yesterday it is indeed a boy. That was a high tech specialist scan though...
  • that was interesting! I looked at my U/S pics and baby was not positioned in that way so I couldn't see!

It kinda has to do with the angle of the dangle...a highly skilled technician knows what to look for as both boy and girl have appendages at this stage...it isn't the presence or absence of this appendage...it is how it is protruding out. They won't look because it takes that much experience. I find out so early...prior to 13 weeks...during a casual ultrasound after hours...she has never proven me wrong...it is possible in the right setting and right machine.

  • I'm happy to wait until I'm 20 weeks. I don't want to get attached to the idea of a son and then be told it's a daughter, and vice versa. It's worth the wait.

It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.

The blood test you were probably thinking about is the MaterniT21 test. My practice will only do MaterniT21 if your NT scan results indicate increased risk (they opt to do this instead of CVS/Amnio, as it's non-evasive and about the same cost). This can tell you the sex of the baby. But it's different than the bloodwork that's done along with the NT scan. The bloodwork that's typically done with NT scan tests for protein levels produced by the placenta that will also determine risk of trisomies.

Lol after reading this I'm still holding out hope that the doc is wrong (doc swears it's a boy)
  • What I was told was that if it's a girl you will see two lines down there and if not then it's a boy. We are going Monday to a 3d and I will be almost 14 weeks so hopefully we find out!
  • I think it's a bit silly to expect to know before 16 weeks to be honest. Most books and apps say that the baby's genitals don't begin to show themselves until around 16 weeks. We're going to find out at the 20 week scan because that's going to be more reliable.

  • @JennyLynne thanks so much for clearing that up. I was starting to feel like an idiot. Lol You're right! That is exactly what I saw before. This is what happens when I read through too quickly. Thanks
  • They told us "boy" at 12 weeks for my first, and they were right. They also said not to paint the room blue yet at that point. A good tech will admit there's uncertainty at that stage, but can also give an educated guess.
  • My tech also guessed boy at 12w3days. She said she has a "great track record" but also warned us that it's not certain. It is hard not to get attached to the idea while waiting for that 20 week mark, though!

I guess we'll see in 7 more weeks!

  • We were told boy at 13w1d. The tech of course mentioned that she wasn't 100% sure on that and that it was an educated guess. More than anything I think it's kind of fun to get a sneak peak and to contact Dr. Google to see how your baby compares to other pics on the internet.

Great article though. I found that one a few weeks ago... certainly helped me to set my expections.
