Intro and question re Placenta Previa

Hi

I'm new to this board.  I searched for the threads discussing Placent Previa, but I didn't find any.  Forgive me if this is a FAQ.   I posted it on my BMB but apparently there hasn't been much experience with it, so I am reaching out to you gals for some input.

I am about 20 weeks pregnant and expecting twins.  I'm being looked after by the high risk clinic at my local hospital.  Mostly because of repeat losses my age and multiples.  But none of that has really made me think I am really high risk.

At our Anatomy U/S last Thursday I was happy to learn that we are having 2 little girls who are both on track, healthy, and active. That was a relief for sure.

Then the doctor came in and told me she saw a complete placenta previa. She told me that there is a chance that as the pregnancy progresses the placenta may move away from the cervix, depending on where it is actually adheres in my uterus. She told me I would have to have a c-section, and I was back on vag rest. I was told if I had any bleeding to head straight to the hospital. Also, that it was likely that I would be put on bed rest relatively soon. I have follow up with an ultrasound in 2 weeks just to see if it is starting to move.

I googled it and of course Dr Google told me I was going to end up with a hysterecomy or worse dieing. I really shouldn't have done that.

Anywho, anyone else on the watch list for this? What have are your instructions from your doctor.

STMs... what were your experiences?

HI baby VDM, Your story sounds pretty similar to mine.  I'm high risk as well following multiple losses, advanced maternal age (that term is so annoying) and being pregnant with twins. At my 18 week ultrasound they told me i was carrying two healthy baby boys (yay) and that i also had complete placenta previa.  They said they would see me back in a month to check what was happening.  I work nights in an ER and the night before I was supposed to go back for my 22 week ultrasound I started bleeding.  Luckily i was already in the ER.  Ultimately i went to a high risk hospital and was monitored for two days and nights.  Although there was a lot of bleeding both babies were completely fine and no damage to the placenta as well as no shortening to the cervix. And I have had no bleeding since. Because my job is demanding and I work 12 hour shifts i'm out of work for now.  I'll be out until thursday when i have another ultrasound and if placenta has moved i can go back.  If not then i can go back at 28 weeks as long as there have been no more complications.  I'm on restricted activity for now but not total bed rest. It's scary with placenta previa especially seeing all the blood. But knowing there can bleeding with no damage to babies or the placentas is comforting.  Good Luck!! Also if your placenta moves up you don't automatically need a c-section although, I'll definitely be having one as i had one with my three year old.

Thanks Saratoga for the response and the information.

I am hoping to avoid any bleeding and trips to the hospital and especially strict bedrest.  But I guess only time will tell.

I was diagnosed at 20 wks with a complete placenta previa. The next week I woke up, went to the bathroom and started bleeding. It wasn't constant, but enough to be admitted to the hospital and monitored for days. I've been placed on pretty strict bedrest until I deliver. Praying that you don't have any complications!

Hi- I am also AMA (40) with twin girls and was diagnosed with complete placenta previa early on. I was on pelvic rest but not bed rest. At around 30 or 32 weeks they told me my placenta had moved. I never did have any bleeding. Dr told me that it can take a while to move.

Good luck! I was so pleased that it moved and hoped to avoid a c section, but one of the girls is consistently breech/transverse. Hoping she flips by my scheduled c section next Wed.

Thanks so much for this response.  It gives me hope knowing that it can actually move away.  With my history I have been dwelling on the worst case scenarios and this gives me some hope that everything can go smoothly in the end.

    Good luck on Wed!

I'm so glad someone posted about this...it's giving me hope reading about all the peoples who have moved.  I have an ultrasound tomorrow and am hoping to see some movement.

I was diagnosed with complete previa at 20 weeks, and as of my last u/s it moved and is now marginal. The doc thinks it will be completely out of the way by 28 weeks, and I can resume normal activity (I've been on pelvic rest). Also my BFF had a complete previa with her last pregnancy that resolved by 38 weeks. There's hope :)
