Go to the dentist!

When the bump suggests a dental appointment is a good idea they're right. I knew something was up because my gums were bleeding all though I brush an floss twice a day. Anyway- went to the dentists today and signs of gingivitis! She told me its 100% a pregnancy symptom and can be taken care of if treated now. But wow! Take care of your smiles ladies!

Re: Go to the dentist!

  • I had bleeding gums really bad through my first pregnancy and breast feeding. Just when they started to look better I am pregnant again :) I try to floss every night that usually help me

  • One of my best friends developed periodontal disease during her pregnancy. She is due in January. It is pretty major.

  • Lol go! I thought it was under control because bleeding stopped when I added mouthwash. But apparently not. So now ill go a few times between now and baby and it should be ok. I've been so lucky with my teeth I don't want anything to happen!!!
  • I've already had a cleaning, 4 fillings, 2 root canals and 2 crowns this pregnancy! Ugh!
  • ya when i went to the dentist in september for cleaning ...ouch! omg soo painful my gums were bleeding and everything. it was just a cleaning, she told me every pregnant woman will get a small amount of gingivitis? so far my teeth are great no complains or bleeding.

  • I just had to cancel my appt because I gag/throw up almost every time I brush my teeth. Ahhhhhh! Hopefully I can reschedule when that lovely symptom goes away.

  • @manda10884- great tip I had no idea thanks
  • It goes away pretty quickly after the baby is born.
  • I am a dental hygienist and yes pregnant women are more prone to gingivitis (but actually a lot of people have it) just inflamed unhealthy gums but it is reversible with thorough and regular brushing/flossing and getting professional cleanings!) It can eventually progress to periodontitis if not treated and taken care of,which is irreversible bone loss and you don't want that! It is very important to keep excellent oral hygiene during pregnancy!

*Also just to give everyone a little tidbit- when you kiss your babies on the mouth or you share eating utensils, etc you transfer the bad cavity causing and periodontal disease causing bacteria to your baby (they aren't born with it!) so make sure you don't let anyone kiss your babies on the mouth and make sure you have excellent oral care yourself!

Brush at least twice a day and floss at least once a day, and get a professional cleaning every 6 months!

    Sorry! Hygiene rant! Lol

Lol You just reminded me how I personally, have never liked when people kiss their kids on the lips. That's just me. :-)

And yes bleeding gums suck. But nothing feels better than when you brush your teeth and floss. So fresh and so clean. Hehe

  • Yup! I had the same thing. No fun because i hate going to the dentist in the first place. I had it in my first pregnancy also. It went away a little after i gave birth thankfully!

  • I got my teeth cleaned a few weeks ago. I was so proud of myself for not gagging! The hygienist asked when I was due and after I told her April she goes, wow, it's big! Gee thanks lady. Lol

  • I made a point of trying to get to any doctors/caregivers before getting pregnant.  I went to the dentist in June.  I was advised to get my wisdom teeth out (not an emergency, more precautionary).  I was scheduled to get them out a couple of days after finding out I was pregnant.  I was told to reschedule in the second trimester, but just didn't feel comfortable with the drugs and all, so I'm waiting on that until after she's born.  However, I'm about due for my 6 month routine dental visit, so maybe I'll kick my own butt into gear and schedule one for after the holidays (I've never been good at going every 6 months...).
