Who else is still here with me? How's it going? :)

Re: BFing Check in

  • We are! We have successfully weaned down to just an AM feeding. This started last week. I was a little sad to give up the evening, but DD seemed ready, so I'm going with it. I don't know how long we'll keep this up. On one hand, I get sad to think about being totally done. But on the other, she drinks her WCM like a champ, and part of me says wean her now so it's done when DH and I go away for the weekend next month. I just don't want to wean her and then regret it, you know? Ahh, emotions.

  • Still going. Lately she's been nursing more for whatever reason. She will ask to nurse after not eating much of her food meals. I don't know if it's teething related or what, but I'm just rolling with it.

She's also been inexplicably waking at night and nursing. I'm usually so lazy that I just bring her into bed but then it seems she wants to nurse forevaaar. It's annoying. I need to not be lazy because I'm not getting good sleep as a result.

I have, and have always had, probably irrational fears about losing supply. Therefore I'm afraid of not nursing frequently enough and probably nurse more often than I need to. But, she's happy and I'm fine with it so I guess it doesn't really matter. How are you doing, @linzeek44, with the work transition?
  • Still here! Still nursing at least 6 times per day, which includes overnight.  I'm also still pumping once a day at work.  Last night I think I got some longer stretches of sleep out of her.  It seems as though when she wakes a lot I remember it more and when she doesn't my memory of the night is foggy.

I'm hoping she'll start reducing her nighttime nursing sessions, but I think it might be that Mondays she's usually the most tired.  I've started reading her the Nursies When the Sun Shines in hopes that she'll start weaning on her own during the night, but I'm not expecting any miracles.  I just hope over time it will sink in a bit.  :)

I actually posted most of this on the BF board this morning. We weaned completely from daytime pumping and bottles a few weeks ago, and we still nurse morning and evening. She drinks whole milk from a sippy at daycare, and seemed to make the transition really well.

Lately, however, she seems a little obsessive over the remaining sessions. She eats, but then she wants to continue to nurse at her leisure, even though I don't think she's getting anything. If I try to put my top down, she freaks out and signs "more" and tries to pull my shirt back up. I've tried offering her a sippy or pacifier, but she'll just chuck them, shake her head no, and point to my chest. If I give in, she'll try to combine nursing with playing, staying close to me and launching herself at me every few seconds. If I try to end the session, she is inconsolable.

I'm hoping it's just a phase. It's breaking my heart to say no, but I really don't want to be an open buffet all evening, and it's especially difficult when I'm trying to get ready for work in the morning. I'm trying to find ways to distract her with snacks, but often she's not even hungry.

Also, I'd love to hear others' experience with non-WCM milk. She barely drinks any WCM during the day (maybe 3 - 5 oz total) although she is still nursing two sessions. Maybe she'd like a different kind more?

  • We're still plugging along with our before bed nursing. I could probably drop it really easily, but I don't really want to. DH doesn't get it.

jbBeans before going back to work (and therefore dropping most nursing sessions). If she was the least bit fussy it was "oh she's probably hungry" and freaking out when people would say "but she juuuuusssttt ate". I never had any inidication of a supply issue, but I was terrified to give a bottle for the reason. I'm glad to hear I wasn't the only one.

Glad to see that this little group is still going - good work mamas!

  • Still here! I keep saying that I'm going to start weaning. But I haven't. I am in denial that my baby is growing up.

  • I am. I'm currently planning on going until she feels done, unless she's getting really old. ;) I figure it is good for her and I would like weaning to not be an issue. I did give away my freezer stash to another mom who has cancer. I figured she needed it more than I needed the peace of mind. If my body stops producing, then we can deal with it at this point.

  • We are! Once a day in the "middle of the night," which is actually sometimes between 5:30-6:30. If I feed him, he'll go back to sleep for an hour more, so I keep doing it;) He does STTN a couple nights a week, so when that becomes consistent our nursing sessions will end. Or if I end up with too sore of boobs from pregnancy...I can't remember when that peaked for me last time?

    Great job mamas!

  • We are still going as well, usually 3 times a day. @eshee8198 DD would only drink about .5 oz of cows milk in 24hours. We tried almond milk and she is up to 7-10oz per 24 hours. She will also drink 8-10oz of water.

  • I'm still EPing 4x's a day. I still continue to donate regularly to two babies. Don't plan to stop yet.

  • We are still going over here! She nurses around 6 so that she sleeps for another 1 1/2 hours. Then she nurses before her nap and before bed. Sometimes she wants more and other days she's too busy. I just go off of what she wants. I think I will let her decide when to wean. I'm not in a hurry right now.

  • I love this check in. Makes me so happy to know that there are others in a similar place.

Being back at work is an interesting change in our nursing relationship. He doesn't drink a lot while I'm gone (four 2-ounce straw cups of breastmilk-- and the fourth is usually right before I get there to pick him up so he probably doesn't really quite need it). It works out okay because I only pump once and get about 5-6 ounces most days. I pump with the manual pump at night to get the other two to avoid using up my whole meager freezer supply.

He still nurses in the morning (usually once), once when I get him at daycare, and then before bed, and then during the night. We've been trying to get him to sleep without nursing at the first wake up since I'm so over that one; only successful sometimes. The second wake up I feed him. I'm too worried that cutting out sessions on purpose (rather than him doing it himself) will lead to supply dropping and pumping issues, etc.

It's going well though. Work is super supportive of my pumping, which is really nice.

I did have a nightmare that I left seven ounces of milk on the table all night. I had to get up to check to make sure it didn't really happen.

  • I'm here! I'm off from work this week, and for some reason Leo wants to nurse round the clock, like a good old fashioned growth spurt. And some times it's ALL he wants to do. Last night he only wanted to sleep on top of me, while nursing. I'm trying to do the Pantley pull off, but sometimes I feel like it only makes it worse. Oh well. I have no idea what's going on, but if it's anything like all the other developmental phases they go through it'll be over before I know it. I hope.
This is our night if she comes into bed with me, which is why I need to not bring her into bed. She will NOT unlatch, and especially if I'm feeding her from the top boob, I cannot get comfortable enough to fall back asleep, so I don't sleep. Not cool.
  • W turns 14m tomorrow and for the first time, I can't participate in this thread :( We officially dropped the nighttime feeding about a week and a half ago, and he slept through early morning wake up/feeding within a few days of that. I was ready to be done but it's still sad. Keep up the awesome job, mommas!

  • Weaning has stalled for me between dd having pink eye, cough/congestion & now an ear infection. We are still at 3 sessions per day. She still isn't taking to WCM as well as I'd like, so here we are still.

  • I am late to this thread, but still here. We are officially sttn, so the overnight and early morning feelings are done. He is only nursing 1st thing in the morning, before naps, and before bed, and occasionally once during the day if he falls or something that he needs comfort for. I am planning on leaving our schedule as is until at least after the Holidays. Good job ladies, I love this thread, it makes me feel more normal!

  • We are still nursing quite often. I have still not gotten my period yet. Anyone else still not gotten their period back?

I plan on donating my remaining freezer stash to another momma tomorrow.

@JulesDiane I still do not have my period back.

  • my supply is tanking :(:( my boobs never feel full anymore. I pump and hardly get anything out. He nurses multiple times a day but I don't know how much he is getting. I've started trying to add a few more pumping sessions in but my pump is old and I feel like it isn't very efficient. Going to try a few other things to boost my supply back up, I'm not ready to wean yet.

  • @Holly_1007 : Consider lactation cookies with brewer's yeast and flax!  I had great luck with those when I was nursing the first time and my supply tanked (found out later it was due to baby#2!).  I also had luck with fenugreek but some mamas say it makes their babies gassy.
