A/S question, left confuced.

I just had my anatomy scan, and the tech measured the brain, the stomach, and legs and ect. However I remembered some of you mentioned that they are suppost to look at kidneys, and bladder and all that. I don't think my tec checked any of that nor the heart valves. Should I be concerned and call and ask my doctor? He said everything was looking good and fine but it was so fast, like 5 minutes no joke? Any advice will be helpful!

Re: A/S question, left confuced.

  • 5 minutes??? I'm pretty sure it should last a lot longer than that. I haven't had mine yet, but I was told it would take an hour. My NT scan lasted about 45mins-hour.

  • I would call just to verify that they looked at those for your peace of mind.

FWIW, the tech showed us the kidneys and the heart and the heart valves (which was really cool but I'm an anatomy nerd). Also, scan took AT LEAST 20 min/baby.

  • 5 minutes is not ok. It takes at least 20 with a very cooperative baby.

  • I'm not a medical professional, but I think it has to take longer than five minutes, and that's with a super cooperative baby. Will you be having another u/s at all? Maybe they'll do it in parts?

My (second) tech pointed out the chambers of the heart, the stomach, the kidneys, the brain, and the vessels in the cord. She also spent a lot of time measuring things, like the length of the legs and the head circumference.

  • Mine took close to a hour, so I would be concerned with 5 minutes. But if the tech didn't get the pics needed you will be scheduled for another ultrasound. Especially of things like the heart (have to get a pic of all 4 valves) aren't included. Your doctor should go over the ultrasound results at your next appointment

  • Mine took 15-20 minutes, but my daughter was being cooperative for once! She showed me everything that she was measuring, including the kidneys, bladder, and heart.

I agree with PP, if you are concerned you need to call your doctor.
  • Like PP have said both my anatomy scans have lasted roughly 30-an hour. The doctor/tech have all showed us the kidneys, stomach, face etc.
like they said, i would call your doc to make sure everything was scanned

  • Mine was 20-25 minutes. Baby was sleeping during the a/s so it was easy to measure her but it still took a while to look around and measure things. The tech showed us all the parts she was measuring and taking note of, which included her heart, kidneys, bladder, etc. I would call and ask about it.

  • Maybe the tech got confused thinking it was a NT scan when you were really going for your A/S scan...? My anatomy scan took 1 1/2 hours. They looked at the face, arm bones, leg bones, spine, heart valves, kidneys, etc. It was the longest ultrasound that I have had.

  • Mine was about an hour and I still have to go back because she couldn't get a side face shot and one other thing.  I would be a little concerned at 5 mins.

  • Mine was 35 mins. She (the babe) was cooperative - pretty sure she was sleeping because she was pretty still the whole time. We saw everything and even with a cooperative baby it took a while to get pics of all the organs. I'd ask.

  • Mine lasted a full hour because baby is not a morning person (just like me!), and our tech pointed out everything that she was measuring, and took multiple measurements and images of each - I would be a little worried if I were you, too!  As the others have stated, make sure you bring this to your doctor's attention!

Thank you ladies, I did call and they told me that the tech is very good and gets things pretty fast, I have my appointment in 2 weeks with my doctors where he will tell me how everything is and what they measured. I guess I'll just have to wait, just hope everything was measured correctly and good!

There is no way.... I just can't believe he got EVERYTHING he needs off of your baby in 5 minutes. It took my dr 5 min to clearly get a shot of my sons goods...
  • Mine took 30min. If yours was literally 5 minutes something is fishy.

Assilemmm09, I was looking for a post from you given your last post regarding leaks!  I was hoping you'd come back with good news.  I hope, since you didn't mention anything about more leaking or low fluids, or since it sounds like the tech didn't need to call the doc into the scan, everything is good :)
5 minutes does seem awfully short!!  But if they did everything, I guess they did everything!
My baby was VERY cooperative and it still took 40 minutes with a VERY experienced tech I used to work with!!  When you go in again, I would ask to look at the report!  Look and see what they measured.  Ask specifics until they give you the actual numbers!

Yes I did ask about this and they told me that it was more than likely discharge, and since I didn't feel it again I'm sticking to that! Thank you or the concern! And I know I do feel worried but I guess I'll demand in 2 weeks to my doctor that very thing was measuring good. Since the nurse did tell me nobody was authorized to give out information to me but my doctor. (Who is on conference out of town) so for now I can't do nothing but wait and not worry. Thank you all again for your responses.

  • I had mine this morning, and if baby had been in a better position from the beginning, it would have been pretty quick, maybe 10-15 minutes.  The doctor went through each area, checking things off as she went.  She didn't show us the bladder, kidneys, etc., but she did show us the heart and brain and cord.  The only reason it took so long (about 45 minutes) was because baby had its back to us.  Anyway, after I left I realized she didn't give us measurements, so I called and got them.  When in doubt, call!

Eh, this still doesn't sound right. The tech that I see is excellent and moves quickly through measurements but my A/S still lasted over an hour (two babies). Are you sure that it was only 5 mins? They go through a really long list of measurements, I don't think they could physically move that fast.

  • Different level ultrasounds will take different lengths of time.
As well, position of baby will make a difference.

One U/S of DD took 5-10 minutes, another, 45 minutes.
With DS, both took an hour. The first because my uterus was tipped so far back and (TMI) I had a full colon impeding the view. The second ultrasound I had to roll this way and that. Stand up, sit down because baby was in an awkward position for the tech to measure everything. I almost had to go back again to finish the measurements.

But I've known other women that were in and out in 10-15 minutes.
  • Mine was no longer than 10 - 15 minutes. They told me it would take about an hour, but it didn't take nearly that long.  I don't think she told me each and everything that she checked.  She did a bunch of checking and every once in a while would say the ..... looks good, but she didn't go over a checklist with me or anything.  My guess is they probably checked it but didn't really mention everything they checked.  But, if you're concerned, I would call and ask for a report or a copy from your medical file.
  • Mine was an hour and I had a somewhat cooperative little girl except for a couple of pics. I just don't think 5 minutes is realistic. I bet there were 30 pics when they were done.

  • Maybe it just felt like 5 minutes but was actually longer?
  • We were there at least 45 minutes...and she told us each area she was looking at.  We have to go back for a spine measurement because she wasn't cooperating :)

I went today and I would say it was about 45 minutes.... she told us everything she was looking at and typed it onto the image.  I don't think it's even possible to take that many pictures and measurements in 5 minutes... Same as JKS21, baby was facing forward so she couldn't see the cervical spine so I have to go back next week.
