7.5months-teething-nursing

Any suggestions on how to handle nursing with a teething babe?  She has had a rough few days.  She wants to nurse more (fine by me) but she is in so much pain while nursing that she is on and off and crying in pain and ends up more upset then she was prior to seeking comfort from nursing.

We had a few nights of her up every 30min (in bed with me).  For the most part I pop her soother in and she goes back to sleep but when she doesn't want the soother and wants to nurse it starts the cycle of getting more upset from the discomfort.  Last night she was still up at 10:30 as she kept waking and couldn't go back down.  I finally gave her Tylenol...she then slept until 4:30am having only woken for her soother briefly twice.  This is sooooo unusual for her as she still wakes every 2hrs to nurse normally.  I don't like drugging her...but she was just so distraught and exhausted.

Anyone have suggestions?  I feel so bad for her when she wants to nurse for comfort and just ends up hurting more!

Oh, she has no teeth yet but there have been major changes in her gums and I see them in there but they are not bubbling up yet.  She got a sudden rash on her cheeks and chin and started drooling a ton when the sleep/nursing changes took place.

  • The rash is likely from the saliva from teething. Totally normal.

Poor baby! Nursing does help relieve the pain, but cold, like a breastmilk slushie or frozen breastmilk cube in one of these can help too:

Has she started solids? A slice of fruit or veggie from the fridge can help, like gnawing on a carrot or slice of apple. Just watch closely in case she manages to bite some off. If you have one of the mesh pacis, frozen blueberries were a hit with DS. Those things are like $5 at target.

I'm a fan of Tylenol when kids are really hurting, too.

  • We are BLW and she goes to town on really firm food right now (and toys).  We haven't really been giving cold food so I will try that.  We don't have the mesh thing since we've just been giving her the food we eat I didn't see the need but I do like the idea of using it for soft frozen foods so maybe we'll pick one up.

    Thanks!

I liked it for teething because I didn't have to worry about choking on small frozen foods like blueberries or peas. I didn't want to purée anything but really wanted DS to be able to try lots of flavors while numbing his little gums.

We didn't really use the mesh feeder for anything but cold stuff and only really during teething.

  • I agree with Emerald about cold stuff, but I wouldn't call giving Tylenol to a baby in pain "drugging her!" When DS is teething, alternating Tylenol and ibuprofen makes all the difference.

Hang in there! Seeing your baby in pain is the worst.
