Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

LO trying to switch back to two naps?

DS transitioned to one nap around 15 months and has been pretty consistently sleeping 11-1:00 most days. This week however, we've been doing sleep training because night waking started to become an issue since he's been in his big boy bed for a few months. (Had me up for 4-5 hours every night) We've had a lot of progress with the training at bedtime and going back to sleep in the MOTN this week, but can't seem to get the early waking under control. He's been waking around the 5-5:30 mark and doesn't go back to sleep after an hour of repeatedly putting him back in bed. This makes him crash at the early hour of 9:00 for nap time. Should I go with the flow during this training period and let him have a second cat nap in the afternoon, or would that be going totally backwards? The other day when he woke at 5:00, I did not let him take the second nap and by bedtime he was ex.hausted. (Which made bedtime easy because he went to sleep as soon as his head hit the pillow, but he was a total crankball in the late afternoon.) Kind of at a loss here of what to do...go back to two naps or struggle with keeping the one? WWYD?

Re: LO trying to switch back to two naps?

  • DS started climbing (well kind of swinging legs over and falling the rest of the way down) out of his crib at 16 months. I was afraid he would get injured so we moved him into his big boy room. He also surprised us by sleeping amazing on vacation in a bed so we decided to go for it. Plus, we've got a baby due in Feb. that will be taking over his old nursery and we wanted to give him as much time as possible to adjust to his new surroundings before she shows up! His first night in there was Labor Day and all of Sept went amazing, then Oct hit and it all went to Hell for some reason. But the training is going good...we child proofed the room and gated him in and he's doing amazing! A few night of falling asleep on the floor, but now he's starting to climb back in bed :) Just gotta get this early waking thing figured out!

  • I would follow his lead and let him nap if he's sleepy.  I will also add that when DS1 transitioned to a twin bed from his crib, he began waking up earlier and it never got better.  He is still a super early riser and we introduced an Okay to Wake clock once he was old enough to understand the concept just so he would play quietly in his room until an acceptable hour.  Good luck!

Hmm I guess maybe I just might have many 5 am mornings ahead of me! Yikes. I am most definitely getting one of those clocks when I feel he's capable of understanding that!
