can double health insurance bite me in the butt?

After posting my WTF about health insurance I finally got through to someone who knows what the F they are talking about, and turns out they DID receive all the correct paperwork and DS is covered under DH's insurance. Yay!!! When I told our HR lady that I would be cancelling coverage through my employer for DS and myself, she informed me that my employer pays 100% of the premium for me. That the premium I was paying was for DS's coverage. So I am thinking of cancelling my coverage for DS but keeping it for me. I can't see how double coverage would be a bad thing, especially with LO due in February. I'm pretty sure my insurance covers 100% of costs for birth, but I would have DH's in case that isn't correct. I'm not seeing any negatives to this.

Is there something I'm missing? Can double coverage bite me in the ass for any reason?

  • Yeah, it wouldn't necessarily be that your insurance is primary just because it's your insurance. Who's birthday is first? Also some plans can't or won't cordinate benefits. You would need to know if both plans can cordinate. For example, since my plan is a HDHP (high deductible health plan) with an HSA. My insurance plan won't cordinate benefits otherwise I would have DD on my insurance with the other kids (for free) but instead she's just on her SM's plan.

Dink's insurance is primary.  They have a $25 office copay for every visit - our insurance pays 100% of that copay.  This includes C's therapy.

In your case, they would probably go by the birthday rule, tho I'm not 100% sure.  In any case, whatever the primary doesn't cover will then go to the secondary, which can help when you're facing deductibles at the first of the year.  We also have a flex spending plan to cover out of pocket expenses.
What is the birthday rule? Earliest birthday is primary?

If my insurance is primary and DH's has a $600/yr family deductible, would what my insurance pays count toward that?

I need to do some research to learn how this stuff works....

  • So if you have two insurances then the primary would pay whatever they are going to pay. Whatever is left over is billed to Insurance #2. Then what ever is left over after that (if anything) is what you pay. I would love to have the opportunity to be double insured but its not in the cards for us financially.
