OT: recommend your vehicle

I need a new car before baby comes. I currently drive an '06 4 door Toyota Tacoma, and its just not going to work with 2 kids. Recommend your vehicle or a vehicle you're interested in. (Sorry for the odd formatting, my ipad has a mind of its own...)

How does it do with car seats? I'm tall with really long legs, and I've heard you have to sacrifice a lot of leg room in order to have car seats installed.

  • I'd highly recommend the Passat as well, especially if you buy after 2012. My DH has a 2013 VW Passat and I seem to have a thing for huge carseats and we've never had an issue. We're kinda short but there is a ton of leg room in the front seats and the rear seats- he's driven with a few tall guys in the car and not had an issue. And the trunk is huge! It's definitely a nice comfy car and if you get the TDI version it's great on fuel, he gets 800 miles in 1 tank!

  • DH and I are looking to trade in BOTH of our vehicles and make due with one (I have job lined up for after baby and will be working nights. No day care, yay?)

That was off topic- but we're looking at the new Impalas, drove one the other day and LOVED it. I have a 2013 Chevy Malibu atm that I also love but the Impala has more trunk space and leg room then it does (good for grocery runs with a stroller). Great gas mileage too.

  • We have a Dodge Journey with the 3rd row. The only downside of it so far has been that we couldn't install the carseats (the Graco Snugride or the Britax Marathon) in the middle seat correctly due to a "hump" it has from where the seats fold down so we had to install behind the passenger seat and soon will have DS's car seat installed FF behind the driver's seat so that the Snugride can be installed for DS#2 behind the passenger.

  • I drive a Nissan Xterra. Plenty of room for 2 car seats and tons of room in the back for strollers and what not. I love it and its so comfy.
  • I drive a Hyundai Tucson and I absolutely LOVE it!! Def one to look into!
  • Can I just say I love this thread, since I just found out a need a new car too.

  • Love my BMW X1 - feels smaller for all the room. Would easily fit 2 car seats and while I'm short myself, it does work well for tall people. Regardless of the car model- if you can get a heated steering wheel (if you have cold winters) I highly recommend it! My DH 5 series could fit 3 car seats nicely and is very comfortable. I don't like how it feels bigg-ish driving though.

  • 2008 Ford Explorer - Last weekend we fit three full sized car seats (not the infant carriers) and four adults who were all 5 foot 6 or taller and did not feel cramped at all.  We also had two umbrella strollers and three pumpkins in the back so plenty of room.  :) Love the explorer!

  • We have the Mazda CX5 and love it, however I'm not sure how the leg room will be once we have the rear facing infant seat.  I wonder if it would be better with the CX7 or CX9.  We also have a Doge Charger and not sure how its going to be with the car seats.  I'm short so it should be okay, but DH is 6'3" and I have a feeling he won't do well in the passenger of either vehicle once we have the infant seat installed behind it.

We had the Lexus RX350 with DD and then got a Jeep Grand Cherokee - both of which had plenty of leg room even with the carseats installed, so I highly recommend both.

We HAD a 2 door Jeep Wrangler - loved the car, but not with an infant.

  • 2014 Subaru Forester - highest safety of any cross-over SUV, plenty of room for two kids, and very good lease rates I find. We just picked it up last night and I'm in love :)

  • 2011 Ford Edge. Love it. I'm 5'11 and my husband is 6'5 and the legroom in the backseat is fantastic even behind him. Gas mileage is decent and it rides very smooth.

  • We have a Prius and a 2 door Honda Civic.  The Prius is awesome on gas, and we both take public transportation to work, so we don't drive a whole lot.  My Civic runs perfectly and I'm not getting rid of it until I absolutely have to.  I personally would rather be annoyed at getting the baby in and out of a 2 door rather then have a second car payment.

  • we have the acura rdx - i wish we could fit the mdx in our garage but we live in center city philadelphia, so it was too big - we love it, and it drives brilliantly.  it works very well with one car seat and i think it should be fine with two - going to install the infant seat back in in a few weeks

  • Our Xterra got written off in an accident almost 4 months ago.  After scoping out the ladies on thisi board and their recommendations for SUV's and two full days of test driving, we ended up going with the GMC Acadia.

    Love it!!
  • We have a Mazda 3 and its a little small to comfortably fit a rear-facing seat in it, otherwise we love it. We also have a Ford Expedition and it seats 8 comfortably.

  • We have a 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek and a 2013 Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited (4 door).  Love them both, but sort of regretting not leasing the Crosstrek over purchasing it, because I have a feeling we're going to want to upgrade it in a few years.

I have the RDX as well and love it.  I actually like it better than the MDX since it has the turbo engine.

I spent the day at subaru yesterday and am leaning heavily towards either an outback or 2014 forester!

Ah - I'm totally leaning towards this one. I spent the day at subaru yesterday and am going back again this morning. I am swaying slightly more to the forester, but DH is pushing for the outback.... What colour did you get?

My mom has a 2010 forester and loves it. He got it for the safety rating and bc it is a Subaru, which lasts forever.

  • I had a Jeep Grand Cherokee, and I would take that back in a heart beat. I sold my car so I only have MH's 2012 Jeep Patriot. For a small SUV, it does the job and I do really like it. I would like something bigger, though.

We were leasing a 2011 Grand Cherokee and almost traded it in for a 2014, but it was up to my husband and he really wanted a new Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited (we had a 95 Wrangler that we sold when we bought the new one).  I love it, but there's definitely a lot more luxuries in the Grand Cherokee!  I know he said several times that he wishes the Wrangler had "all of the things", but then it wouldn't be a Wrangler :)  I still think the Nav/dvd player & heated seats are pushing the limits of what a Wrangler should have, but with my hips and back lately, I'm not complaining about the built in heat pads!

  • We went with a 2014 Subaru Outback. Even with my toddler RF in his Britax Boulevard, I still had over 5 inches of space between the back of his seat and the back of the drivers seat. (Set to accommodate my leggy frame and growing belly!) The symmetrical AWD is amazing for our crazy Canadian winters as well. I have to wait a couple of weeks for it to come in because of the colour I wanted, but I'm so excited to get it!

  • we have an 07 nissan sentra and an 06 Jeep wrangler x (2-door). my shower is tomorrow and I can't wait to see how the infant seat fits in each but the plan basically is whoever has the baby has the nissan.

the sentra is great on gas mileage and spacious inside but it has a weird bubbly design and deep dashboard section that makes it feel like a spaceship and because of that it actually has a weird front end blind spot which can be scary when you are going around a curve - I literally lean with my turns. I feel like the car is either suited to only drive straight or for the driver to be seated in the exact middle. both cars have sufficient leg room as both me and DH are tall 5'8" and 6'2" - except of course for the jeep's small backseat and minimal trunk space.

we decided to wait on buying a new car at least until near the end of my maternity leave. with it being winter I won't be leaving the house much and we won't have to worry about who is going where and where baby is going to be in the mix. also the jeep is most likely to be voted off the team (which I am heartbroken about!! i love it) and it has 4wd for the snow so DH can use it to get through the winter weather and we can make a much more informed decision about what our needs are at that time. I want an SUV (or a 4door jeep!) and he wants an extended cab pick up- we just can't agree.

  • When we started planning to have a third we bought an Acadia and I love it. Although we don't have three kids yet I've been carpooling lots to preschool and it has worked out great. Before that I was driving a Honda accord and my DH had a jeep Cherokee. Both were great. We still have the accord and I'm hoping we have it for a long time- long enough to be able to get 3 older kids in the back when we are using more booster seats.

I won't lie, I get a little pissed off every time I get out of the Patriot that my seat doesn't automatically move back away from the steering wheel to allow me more room to get out. Or that my wipers don't sense rain and go off automatically. Sigh. Stupid Patriot. Mine was a 2005, but it had allll the things and was ah-mazing.

DH wanted me to get a Wrangler when we had to replace the GC, but it just didn't have what I wanted and I couldn't justify the price. I do love them, though! I'd like DH to have one, actually.

He said I could get a new GC (I'll go with gently used) next year, since we will have to have another vehicle again. We'll see...I'm kind of liking the new Explorers, too.
