S/O Christmas gifts

Do you just do gifts from Santa, or are some things designated from you? The past couple of years, we just did that everything was from Santa (DS didn't really know what was up anyway), but when I was a kid, we had some Santa gifts and some parent gifts.

  • We only do stockings/gifts around the mantle from Santa, and all of the gifts around the tree are from us, though I think this is an unusual way to do it.

  • We do 3 gifts from Santa and then anything else is from us.

That is exactly what we are doing :)

  • We're doing both from us and Santa. I usually determine the amount of gifts and try to keep them somewhat even from Santa and us. The stocking is always from Santa. My parents did it this way and we've decided to keep it that way for our family as well.

They will get one big gift from Santa and a few smaller things. Then one gift we know they will love from us, like James is getting a toy truck that has a trailer and 2 dirt bikes on the trailer. He is all about anything with a trailer right now so I expect it to be one of his most favorite gifts. And they will give each other a gift. So far, we are doing books for them to give each other.

ETA: and we set it up with the gifts from people we know (us, the kids, grandparents, aunts...) under the tree. The Santa gifts are not wrapped and out ready to play with as soon as they come down stairs.

  • Stockings and the big gift come from Santa-- this year it'll be either large foam climbing blocks or a plastic indoor/outdoor climber for Jasper, and an Ipod touch for my 9 y/o. The rest will be from us. Santa gifts aren't wrapped at our house, either, though sometimes if there is something small that is really desired (mainly in the case of DS1 since DS2 is little and doesn't really get it yet) I'll wrap that in the stocking just for some more suspense. I love excited Christmas face!

This was always the tradition in my family as well. That's how we plan to do it for DD.

  • My parents always made all the gifts from Santa...I think we will do that as well, but on Christmas Eve we give him PJs and a book

  • Stockings from Santa, everything else from parents (or grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc). We got to open one gift on Christmas Eve and the rest on Christmas morning.

  • We do a few from Santa and a few from us.

Also, any "BIG AWESOME" gifts are from us.  This is because I have several friends who made the BIG AWESOME gift from Santa, and as the child gets a little older they think they can ask for ANYTHING (like Nintendo DS or iPad mini at age 7) and Santa will bring it because Santa always comes through even if mom and dad say that is too expensive.

  • We will do stockings and 1 big gift from Santa. Then we will do the want, need, wear, read from us. I have yet to decide if the wear and read will be our Christmas Eve gifts or if we will do pjs and a Christmas book for st. Nicks.

  • I'll just let them believe they are all from Santa till they figure out he isn't real.  That's what my parents did and I think we figured out Santa wasn't real around 6 or 7 years old.  I have a 5 and 6 year old and they are so freaking stoked about Christmas I just let them think Santa brings it all.  I do however make a point to take them to buy gifts for others and give things like toys and stuff to charity and stuff so they will learn to have a giving spirit.  They LOVE trying to wrap things.  We get them stuff they know is from us too, but for the most part we just play along with Santa.  It's such a short period of imagination in their life, I just love how excited they are.

We're going to do the 'something they want, something they need, something to read' thing. All three of those gifts will be from us. They'll get one larger gift to share as well, and that will be from Santa. Their stockings will be filled by Santa also.

Skipping the "something to wear" part?!
  • My parents always did a mixture; some from Santa, some from them, all wrapped under the tree.  The stockings were always from Santa.  I think they always made the one they knew would be our favorite from them though.  I have not discussed this with H actually, I am not sure how they did it in their family.  This is our first X-mas together as a family with Audrey since he was deployed last year, so we are having all these "traditions" talks a year later than we probably would have.  We just finished talking about Thanksgiving and what meals we will do on Christmas Eve and Christmas so the next talk will be about presents and those logistics.

Total aside, but it pains me to think a 6-year-old would be over Santa. Do I come from a naive family? My brother and I, all our cousins, everyone, was a strong believer well into elementary school. SANTA ROCKS

I do not remember when I stopped believing in Santa but I think it was well after 5 or 6.  I did not have any older siblings to ruin it for me though :-)

  • In our home the toys are from Santa and and the stocking stuffers and clothing items are from the parents.

I remember being in second grade when the kids at school started talking about Santa not being real. I held strong until 3rd grade.

I was in second grade (I was 6 going on 7) when my sisters spoiled it for me.  They were 8 and 10.  I wasn't disturbed by it.  I kind of just had an ah-ha moment because I always wondered how Santa's elves got it in the same plastic packages that the store put them in.  Lol, skeptic for life.

  • We will do a couple from us and a couple from Santa. I think I was around 7 or 8 when I figured out Santa wasn't real. I do remember being relieved. I was always creeped out that some old man was coming into our house while we all slept.....I'm a weirdo.

  • I would like to get him a Strider balance bike and maybe a small trampoline with a handle as his big gift. I found an awesome latch board I love but it is super expensive so I am having my dad make him one. I want to black Friday shop for a good deal on some Disney movies. I think I am going to steal the Christmas eve book idea. Maybe I will do a Christmas book each year and write a little note in it, we would end up with quite a Christmas book collection. All this Christmas talk made me remember I need to find an elf on the shelf for my daycare kids.

We do gifts from both Santa and parents. All gifts are wrapped. Santa fills the stockings, sends a few gifts and one big family gift that the three of us can enjoy together (last year, it was an annual membership to the zoo) -- this is all tradition from my family.

PJs and ornaments will be given when we decorate the tree (Thanksgiving weekend -- also my birthday. Double score)

I like the big family gift idea!

    What is a latch board?

It is a board with different types of latches and locks maybe a light switch or a door knob even. It's great for fine motor skills and kids love them from what I've seen.
