*** Gestational Diabetes Check In 10/25/13

It's been a rough week for me, GD wise.
I started Insulin (lantus 10 units daily) last week, and still wasn't well controlled so I had to go to 15 units of lantus daily as of today. I've been trying so hard to watch what I eat, and I'm frustrated that it didn't work.

Plus my OB wants to start weekly NST/AFIs and weekly OB visits. I did talk with him about the possibility of inducing early. Lucky for me, we are on the same page and want to let nature take care of it, so no induction.

I am definitely uncomfortable and don't like being pregnant, but I also want LO to bake as long as intended.

Sorry, long and not really a question, but just had to get it out :)

  • I missed the GD check in too I think.. So I'll share my weekly progress.

Love tit for sharing. Not cause I love your the fact that you're on insulin :(

I've been testing blood sugar for a week and a half. I've been sick and taking Sudafed + lots of cough drops. My endocrinologist (& @jyparker725) said numbers were a little higher when sick. But other than that my numbers have been controlled with diet. I have been good with what I'm eating. It's basically the same way I are for years before I got pregnant so it's not difficult. And it'll be easier to lose weight after. I see my OB Tuesday so I'll see about induction and whatnot.

Hope all my GD ladies had a good week!

  • I missed the check in too. Dr lowered my glyberide yesterday since I have been bottoming out. Today my numbers were high but I blame it on a very stressful and emotional day at work.

The good news is that I had an ultrasound yesterday and everything is normal. Baby is measuring one week ahead, 47%, 4lbs 14oz. So far no monster baby!

I still feel like there is no way I will make it to my scheduled RCS on 12/4. DH and I decided that I will be leaving work next Thursday due to the amount of stress it is causing. Today I was assigned five days of on call when I am 39 weeks.
  • @candip523 glad to hear LO is measuring normal!

What do you do for work? I'm wondering if I'm going to make it to my maternity leave also.

  • I didn't see the check-in this week either!

My numbers were better this week. Like @jenniferbromley said I had high numbers due to sickness last week too. Overall, I feel like I've hit the wall with this. I forgot to check my numbers twice this week. I also had a piece of cake yesterday because my work threw me a shower and my boss had a special cake made. They don't know about my GD and I didn't want to disappoint anyone. I didn't check my number again until after dinner and it was 137. My fasting number this morning was 76 though. I also had a busy week with work and I only got one long walk in. I want to brush off this week and refresh myself starting tomorrow.

My baby check-ups are going great. Two weeks in a row my non-stress tests have been perfect. She is measuring in the 50th percentile and scored a 10/10 for what they were checking on. My dr. said that I will still have to be induced between the 39/40 week, even if my numbers stay on track and her sizing is good. I'm pretty frustrated by this. I hope she comes on her own before the scheduled induction.
  • ekruegerrn  Sorry you are having a rough week :(  I am glad you and your doctor are on the same page though regarding the delivery!  I

jenniferbromley  Hope you feel better soon!

CandiP523  That's great news about LO's size!  It gives me hope!  I hope your doctor figures out your dose soon, and I'm glad you are leaving work next week--you don't need that extra stress!

No big updates here.  My numbers have still been good, I bring them into my doctor on Tuesday to review.  I have a growth scan at the appointment, I am nervous about LO's size but at least I will know how he's doing.

  • I also must have missed the check in.  This is my first week testing, as I was just diagnosed last week.  So far, my numbers have all been good controlling with diet.  I had one high reading, but I testing right after a really stressful event at work, so I blame that.

It's been hard giving up the juice and sweets, as I've been craving these throughout the pregnancy.  But, starting to get a routine going.

I meet with my OB (well her NP this time) next week for the first time since diagnosis, so I'm sure I'll have lots of questions as to what happens next in terms of future appointments, tests, etc.

  • I was just going to ask if it was posted because I missed it too! I was waiting for it to post a question. I've been checking my numbers for over a week now, and I'm starting to see a trend up. I saw MFM and the dietician on Wed. And they were both very happy with my numbers up until that point. I was given great ideas for snacks, because that seems to be where I was struggling to get variety. I've been keeping my carbs low for breakfast (under 20g carbs)...but my numbers are trending up. Today 1 hour pp was 137 and I had a breakfast sandwich with an egg, slice of cheese, ham, and it was on low carb bread...this is the same breakfast I eat every other morning with no problems. I also have not changed my evening snack, and my fasting numbers have been fine. Anyone have any ideas? I'm going to fax my numbers to the dietician Monday but I thought I'd ask here to see if anyone had any pointers. I see my OB Monday, but that's just routine. (Sorry no paragraphs, mobile erases them)

  • jyparker725   I am in the same boat as you with my doctor, she is insisting on inducing by 40 weeks (more likely 39) no matter what.    It's really frustrating, and I am nervous about induction, especially after some of the threads that have been posted :(

  • Hey ladies! So far this week my numbers have been good except Tuesday. After lunch my bs was only 72, crazy low for a meal that is normally around 100. Then for dinner I had a salad with chicken, egg, cheese, and veggies plus a roll. My bs was a shocking 179! I had a doc appointment yesterday and he was "okay" with the weird high because even with it, my averages are still within range. Super frustrating though. When I am in L&D having baby girl I am sending someone to the grocery to stock the house with ALL the carbs!
  • I guess I will check in too. My numbers have been good all week. I even survived a weekend out of town at a hotel. It was tough watching people eat yummy food at the restaurants while I ate mostly chicken, salad, cheese, and eggs. I am like @jyparker725 and feel I have hit a bit of a wall. I also am at my parents house tonight and watching them eat chips, sandwiches, candy and other carb loaded food is hard. I wish I had more support around family.

I don't think I cooked dinner all week because what I want is carbs (pizza, pasta, pancakes, dairy queen blizzards and yummy biscuits or rolls, etc.). I am bored of the food. I eat one of about 4 different Weight Watchers frozen meals for lunch with a piece of bread and cup of milk. Breakfast has been either a Nutrigrain bar or half an English muffin with cheese. Dinner has been salads,4 piece chicken nuggets, baked chicken and green beans. I don't cook much and neither does my DH. When DH and I are at restaurants I always have him get me a gulp of Sprite or something because it doesn't seem to be raising my blood sugar two hours later.

I keep on reminding myself I only have about 35 days of this to go (I am 35 weeks on Sunday). I am glad my appt this Tuesday actually is with my OB and not the PA or NP, because I want to know what she is thinking for the plan for the rest of this pregnancy. I haven't seen my OB since September.

  • @lemeisch Hang in there! It is tough eating around other people. DH has had pizza like 4 times in front of me while I eat my salad. It stinks. On the bright side, my weight has been really good since I started dieting though. I've only gained 3 pounds in the last 6 weeks. Prior to that I had put on 25 pounds.
  • lemeisch  Sorry about your family, it sucks to have to watch other people eat stuff we can't have.  My husband is trying to be supportive, but he still eats a lot of stuff in front of me I can't have.  It makes me really bitter that I'm the pregnant one and I have to watch what I eat!

  • @earychener that same thing has happened to. I'll eat the exact meal at the same exact time and my numbers have been different. My specialist couldn't give me a specific answer other than that stress could be the cause. It is really frustrating! I hope things even out for you!

I told DH that I might gain weight after I have LO just because I'm going to have a list of foods I want to eat after she comes...lol (I really am not going to do that, but it feels like it sometimes when I think of all the food I want)

  • @lrachelle80 I'll change it when I get back to my computer :)

It's my understanding that insulin tolerance can increase as you progress in pregnancy, so as you get more pregnant your glucose numbers may get higher even with the same foods. Ugh. Sounds like it's not just me dealing with fluctuating numbers.

  • Checking in...I had a fairly good week. I met with the nutritionist again this week and she was happy with my numbers. I got the okay to add in another morning snack and that has really helped me manage my ketones. I have had a few high numbers after dinner. I have been a little annoyed because they are only 2-3 points above normal. I did have a bowl of cereal for dinner one night and that really shot my numbers up. I have been doing well with cooking but I just didn't want to cook that night.
I know that people have been discussing induction with their doctors...has anyone discussed if any additional monitoring is required during labor or if baby will need any specific care after birth? I see my midwife on Wednesday and I plan to ask her then.

I just asked dr about this on Wednesday. She said that they will check the baby's blood sugar immediately and then regularly after that. She said a lot of babies bottom out as soon as they are born and may need to be given sugar water since they won't be eating yet. As far as us, dr said no testing is needed after delivery but recommended periodic checks since now at higher risk of type 2.
  • Numbers really good this week except fasting, so dr put me on glyburide twice a day. Then yesterday reduced it to once a day. Yay. Having problems eating as often as I'm supposed to though, which is causing a lot of low numbers. Plus, I can't check at work really. I'm a teacher and I can't really say, hold on... That just won't work. Plus now I'm going in twice a week to fetal assessment for the non stress tests. Friday it went really well. Concern: I just got back from Boo at the Zoo in DC. Super fun, tons of walking, and it was cold. On the way home, and now at home, I am feeling some tightness, like mild BH contractions. Anyone else's feel this after exertion? No pain, and baby is moving around, it just feels... Tight, then it goes away. I've had maybe four randomly in the last two hours...

  • I just had some sugar free strawberry Jello with Cool Whip on top and it was SO GOOD!

Just felt the need to tell you ladies that.

  • Hey understand the frustration. I was following the diet and exercising and my day numbers were good but my fasting number was still a little high. Now I need to take 5 units of insulin before bed and it will increase as I go on. I'm disappointed and feel like a failure even though I know I'm doing the best I can. I'll be 31 weeks this week so just need to keep on keeping on.

    - How are you doing with reaching your goal numbers? How often do you go over, if at all? (i.e. once a day? once a week? never?) Numbers have been mostly kept in check (we were out of town this weekend so I had one testing that was at 124) - What has been your biggest challenge of the week? How do you think you can overcome it next time? Definitely being out of town in Door County. I was surrounded by pumpkin flavored this, Apple cider flavored that, cherry flavored this. It was hard to not be able to indulge in all the yummy foods. I did enjoy an apple cider slush and surprisingly it didn't spike my sugar level - Have you found any delicious recipes/snacks/meals that you enjoyed this week or are eager to try? (Share a link!) I haven't, I have to though because I've been mostly sticking to the same meals that I find work with my levels and I'm getting bored. Another 8 weeks of the same meals could be awful Also to add my fasting number they want under 90 and I was getting a few readings of exactly 90 I've started eating a 1/2 to a whole apple at night right before bed and it has brought my number down between 85-87
  • Hi!! New here but post here and there. This is my second pregnancy and second time with GD, with DD1- controlled with diet and excersise - ended up being induced at 38wks and had a 9lb10oz baby. She was in nicu for almost 2 wks with complications from dangerously low blood sugars. I'm hoping to avoid that with this one. We tested my blood sugars early and knew around 14/15 wks I had it again. It was being controlled by diet and excersise but I was put on insulin 2.5wks ago at night due to high fasting #s- So far things are ok and fasting numbers are much better. I have a u/s next week to check on growth
  • Nurse put me on the meds last week- one 2.5 pill at bed and then another in the am because even with 2 eggs and a slice of toast my numbers were 140-160! The pill has helped but by Saturday my midnight testing I was 63 and then fasting I was 52 so they reduced the pill to half each time instead. Fasting was great and I didn't go too low breakfast was difficult. DH found sugar free, milk free protein shake at the store and now my breakfast numbers are around 110!
I knew things would be high last night I had too many crackers with my cheese and a few bites of DHs pasta salad after his softball game so fasting was too high so I know I really need to watch it!! I know it's only for a few more weeks but it's hard to change your way of thinking so abruptly and around the holidays!! I haven't told many people so they are offering many tasty sweet treats that I have to graciously accept and then give to another teacher!! Thanks for listening!
