A in Easy

Hi all- I lurk and learn a lot from your experiences. My daughter is 9 weeks old, and the Ped. has no concerns except she doesn't lift/turn her head while on her tummy much. So I've been trying to be more proactive re: tummy time (which she just about hates): "flying," sit-ups with her on my knees, etc. We try to stick to the Baby Whisperer's EASY routine, and it generally works for us, but I wonder if I'm doing the Activity part correctly: I feel like I hold/wear her pretty constantly, which I'm not sure is ideal for independent play and, by extension, physical development. Though she has strong neck and upper back control, she's not close to rolling over- could this be because I'm not giving her enough "her" time? Between feedings and naps, what does your "typical" routine look like- carrying, engaging, toys, etc.? I appreciate your taking the time to respond if you can.

  • It's still early for her to roll over, so don't expect that for a while longer. For activity, we do a lot of tummy time/playing on the playmat, reading, or just "chatting" with him propped up on my knees.

  • See, I have the opposite problem. I think I am over doing it during activity time. I have several chairs/mats/swings. I move her from one to the other until she seems bored or gets fussy. I am trying to start wearing her more during awake time and just letting her "chill". But I just have her play on her mats or in her bouncy chair, sometimes I sit next to her and engage with her or talk to her, and sometimes I get stuff done around the house while she plays independently. In my opinion (and that's all it is), I do think having some independent play is important.

  • Savannah likes to sit on my knees faces me while I talk /sing to her. She hates tummy time on the mat with me but will do it at day care no problem. I slouch down on the couch and put her on my chest for tummy time.she also really enjoys me holding her facing me with her head on my shoulder. That helps her neck too caise she looks around a lot from there. Like Jill said, it's way too early yet for rolling over on purpose. Don't worry about that.

  • Mine is 9 weeks also and she's not showing signs of attempting to roll. She just started really lifting her head from flat on her tummy this week. My pedi is not concerned.
Sounds like you are doing everything you can. Every baby is different.
  • Mine is almost 9 weeks old and she doesnt like to move her head much duringtummy time. She loves laying on her timmy to sleep so usually she starts to doze off during tummy time. she will lift her head very high, and hold it there often when she is laying on my chest. I think as long as she is obviously gaining neck strength, youre okay right now.

  • I agree it's still on the early side to roll over, my DS is 13 weeks and just started rolling (belly to back) last week.  He wakes up and nurses (about 30 min) then he's awake for about an hour, I hold him a bit, or put him in the boppy and talk to him while doing some chores, and then do some "belly time" before putting down for nap (about 2.5 hours) then he wakes up and does it again!  I try not to do belly time right after eating because that usually ends up with a face full of spit up on the floor, depending on his mood he can get about 10-15 minutes before he's had enough.

  • Holding and wearing your baby will not cause motor delays. I wear LO frequently throughout the day and just recently (he's 3 months), increased his tummy time and floor time. I wouldn't worry about rolling at this point, but she should be able to lift and turn her head when on her tummy.
  • For activity, we put him on his activity mat for both back time and tummy time. Plus, DH likes to put him on his tummy, lean back in the chair, and do his "neckersizes." I sometimes sit in the rocking chair and read to him but he is not really interested in that yet. Finally, we like to talk to him about our day. He may just be looking at us but it helps in language development.

LO is two months and can roll over from tummy to back. However, THAT is early. Our pediatrician said that rolling over happens at about 4 months of age on average. I wouldn't worry about it too much.
