Acid Reflux Horror

LO was diagnosed with acid reflux, more so silent reflux. It was terrible to see him constantly crying, squirming and almost in a trance from the pain. Nurse Practitioner put us on Zantac and LO did okay but not great with it. He was still having episodes of pain and also started to choke during feeds. The Nurse practitioner changed us over to Prilosec today and we took him off the Zantac... well today was awful. I know the medicine will take time to kick in but seeing him choke is the scariest thing in the world to me.

I've mentioned this to the NP a few times and they don't seem concerned. Nor do they seem to be concerned about his gasping for air at times either. I have LO's 2 month appointment with the actual DR this week, I am going to mention this to her. But am I just being over paranoid about seeing him choking on spit up? Is this common? He isn't turning colors and catches his breath quickly but its still hard to see.

I hope this medicine works the poor little guy just cries all day and won't let me put him down even to have a potty or shower break!

Re: Acid Reflux Horror

  • Yep, the choking happens. It is scary to watch. When you try to put him down, are you putting him on an incline? We have trouble just for the short time of her laying flat on the changing table. When we decide to move her to the crib, we will be getting a wedge. She sleeps and naps in her RNP or her swing in the reclined position. Are you Bf'ing or FF'ing? If FF'ing, maybe try a different formula?

  • Yes, we have the RNP... thank god for it! I do not know what I would do without it. I have a pillow on his changing table to keep his head a bit elevated. I think we'lll need to get a wedge for the crib as well.
  • Why on earth did they make you stop the zantac cold turkey? Prilosec takes up to two weeks to take effect. You should be givong him both meds, spaced 4 hours apart. Talk to the doctor or get a second opinion. Your child doesn't have to suffer.

  • Tyler doesn't have reflux, but he likes to guzzle his milk as fast as possible and sometimes starts to choke. It scares the hell out of me, especially during those motn feedings. Hope they figure out the right combo to help your lo

Yes, this. No acid reflux med should be stopped cold turkey. It can actually cause the acid to be worse.

  • Maybe you can video the episodes to show the dr your concerns.
  • I agree with two PP.. They should hdve slowly weaned him from the Zantac, or, what my doc did was add prevacid in addition to the Zantac because his reflux is so bad.
  • we called twice and the NP who put him on this med said he couldnt be couldnt be on both. I'm going to call the pharmacy for a second opinion today. Thanks folks!!
  • The NP is wrong. It's common practice to use both while starting Prilosec. They work in completely different ways. Go here for more information. This will help you ask the right questions and be a good advocate for your child's well being.

  • Liam chokes some when he guzzles fast. I noticed he was having reflux and since we co-sleep I got him a nap mat to provide a little bit of an incline. Between that and added a small amount of cereal into a bottle at night he has done much better. No acid reflux attacks since. I did tell his doctor about this and she said both are fine.

  • We're in the same boat!  She's even had it to where it projectiles out of her mouth and nose at the same time.  Her face turns purple so I have to flip her over really fast and pat her back for it to come out.  The doctor also told us to always have the nose bulb close by for instances like this.  It gets better with the right formula and medicine!  I've written about our acid reflux woes in my blog if you're interested.

  • I am a total lurker on this board, but I was reading this and I had the exact same experience. I took my LO completely cold turkey off Zantac to switch to Prilosec. She started screaming in pain and was inconsolable.  She was choking and getting stiff and pulling away while I was trying to feed her. I talked to the doctor and now my LO is on both Zantac and Prilosec and she has been for about a month. She is now so much better. Now she only cries if she wants something or if she is tired. Sometimes she even starts to fall asleep while I nurse her. Maybe try to talk to either the doctor directly or maybe try a different doctor? I know you must be so worried, stressed out, and tired. Hang in there, it will get better.  I had her off of Zantac for about 3 days when I put her on Prilosec.  When I started giving her Zantac again, she started to feel better within about 2 days.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Does your LO have trouble with taking Prevacid? I think mine hates it because its refrigerated..? Any tips on getting him to take it are welcome!
  • @k4maynes our prevacid is in a pill form, I put it in a syringe with a bit of water and shake it and it dissolves..

However he takes an antibiotic that's refrigerated and he's not the biggest fan, I just put it really far back in his mouth so it's quicker to be swallowed and less likely to come back out!
  • @kristykay123 is totally right about the nose bulb. Mines a happy spitter, but that nose bulb has still been a necessity for us.

I would try that but it's 4mls he has to take, which is a lot.. And he's not cooperative! :)
