Question for Nurses...

or anyone who has an opinion.
We are going to go to the walk in clinic tomorrow, but I'm not even sure if they will be able to figure it out.

DD frequently, about every other day, has a temp spike. About 99.6ish every time. Nothing else, maybe a little extra fussy, but other wise seems fine. Then by the next morning it's back to normal. I don't get it. Any ideas? I'm scared to google, but also impatient.

  • What time of day?

  • From what I have noticed, at night. Right around bed time.

  • I'm wondering if it happens ever night, as I only temp her if she is fussy. hmmm.

  • It's normal for a temp to peak at night. Remind me: are you guys insured or would you have to pay OOP? Do you have a regular pedi to take LO to?

  • we are insured. We have a regular pedi but it's impossible to see her in any sort of quick manner. she is normally booked two months in advance (we are looking into finding a new pedi that has less patients) and I LOVE the walk in clinic doc. If I could make him her pedi i would.
The walk in clinic is in the same building/practice or whatever.

If you call your regular pedi, does she get back to you in a timely manner? If so, I'd direct the question to her. But honestly, I wouldn't be worried. That temp is not a true "temp." If it would ease your mind, take her to the walk-in clinic. Nothing at all wrong with getting some extra reassurance.

  • Thank you guys! I wasn't really worried until I mentioned it to my mom. She made it seem like DD was going to self combust at any moment and I got all "oh noes my baby is going to explode, what do I do?!?!"

  • I agree with the above. also, maybe she's warm from being fussy? my girl gets hot if she's having a fussy day/night. she even gave herself a heat rash from screaming at the Dr yesterday since she already does not like strangers (the nurse and Dr) touching her.

  • I'm a hypochondriac, and I take my temp numerous times per day. It's nearly always considered a fever at night. I'm assuming it would normal for a baby too. :)

My mom calls me a few times a week to deliver urgent advice, for example:

"Don't put socks on her tonight. Put her in the footed sleeper. Socks have elastic. I just figured out that that will constrict her blood flow. I hope you got this message."

Jeez. Apparently it's nothing short of a miracle that all 4 of my kids have both their feet.

  • Most people don't even consider it a temperature until its 100.4. It's normal to fluctuate some during the day.

If I listened to all the things my mil thought were wrong with my children I'd own a wing at children's hospital. I'm not a nurse just a mom of many and that doesn't sound alarming to me. To ease your mind have her checked, your a great mom :)
