Handsfree pumping tips

I'll be back to work soon after LO2 and back to pumping every day! I supplemented with DS so pumping wasn't a huge deal but DD is EBF and I'd really like to keep up with her needs. I need to get work done while pumping, particularly phone calls while taking notes.

I never used a handsfree bra. Do you recommend one? Do you put it on over your clothes? I'll probably wear nursing tanks under my clothes most days.

I looked into Pumping Pals but I use a 24mm flange and I think they start at 27mm. Any other suggestions?

Re: Handsfree pumping tips

  • I have the Simple Wishes one and it's great and easy.  It just goes over your clothes. I usually wear a nursing bra or tank under my clothes.

I use the 24mm Medela flanges and have never had an issue.  I highly recommend just making pumping a priority.  It helps if you can get ahead a little too.  I used to try and pump first thing in the morning when I got in even if the baby had just eaten then pumped 2 more times when I would have nursed.  It's a lot less stressful if you can get an extra ounce or 2 every day.

Do you have your own office?  I would seriously pump for like 45 mins just because I could and I was sitting at my desk getting work done.

I've heard good things about that bra. Thanks!

I do have my own office and it would definitely work for me to just leave the pump going for a long time while I return phone calls in the afternoons. That usually takes me 1 or 2 hours a day.

Unfortunately I can't pump first thing in the morning. Almost every day I go straight to court and don't get back to my desk until 12 or so. Mornings at home will be me on my own getting a toddler and the baby up and out the door so I'm not planning to have time to pump then either. My commute is really short (10 to 15 minutes) but I may try to get the hang of pumping and driving.

The Pumping Pals fit differently than the normal Medela flanges. The normal flanges are designed based on nipple size, but Pumping Pals are designed to pull in more tissue. I use the 24mm flange in Medela, but use the large on Pumpin Pals. (I think they come in M, L, XL). If you buy the pack with all three sizes, they come with a money back guarantee, and I can't recommend them highly enough. I managed to increase my output without having to do any compressions or massages while pumping since I got them.

I have the PumpEase hands free bra, mainly because it comes in ridiculous colors that make me smile.

I also keep a blanket with me to keep me warm while I pump because it is FREEZING.

I used the pump ease bra for the same reason!

  • All the advice I received worked for my friends but didn't work well for me... probably due to cup size differences. They just used two hair ties looped together one around the funnel of the pump and the other on the clip of the nursing bra. I couldn't find a good nursing bra so I used a regular one at work. I would take off my bra and put on the hands free bra i bought, the one that is like a strapless bra that zips up. If you go to BBB they have ones in store that you can try on before you buy them. My issue is if i moved too much i would break vacuum suction.
