New to GD - Breakfast questions

I posted last week about being new to GD and now I need some suggestions for breakfast.  I am a picky eater and just really don't know what to try to eat at breakfast time that is not all carbs.  I don't like eggs, cant eat celery or apples (otherwise I would eat these with peanut butter for the protein) and just don't really know what else to try to eat to get my morning protein in.  I have tried doing yogurt but that seems to make my sugar spike so I have been trying to avoid it.

What do you ladies eat for breakfast?

PS: I have a toddler bonus points for quick and easy suggestions.

Re: New to GD - Breakfast questions

  • A sausage patty or a few slices of ham warmed up with a slice of cheese on a whole wheat English muffin is my non-egg go to. If I'm really not feeling hungry I'll have a piece of wheat toast or a freezer waffle with peanut butter, but the breakfast sandwich keeps me fuller longer.

  • Lurker from PgAL here. I also have GD and am allergic to eggs. When you say yogurt spikes your sugars, what kind of yogurt do you mean? I've had success with plain Greek yogurt mixed with a bit of high fiber cereal (All Bran or Smart Bran). Today I had a low carb English muffin with bacon and cheese. Without eggs, it's difficult. You do have fewer options. Nuts might also be a good choice for you. I would avoid fruit for breakfast. I have eaten just straight up grilled cheese out if desperation. This could be improved by adding avocado or a bit of tomato. Breakfast is my biggest challenge.

  • I like smoothies. I use nonfat plain Greek yogurt (I like fage best) a no sugar added carnation instant breakfast pack and almond milk. I like the dark chocolate almond milk by silk. Sometimes I add a tablespoon of peanut butter just for the flavor the yogurt has plenty of protein and then ice. It doesn't have many carbs and it has plenty of protein. It's very quick and easy too.

  • I eat bagel thins with peanut butter when I get desperate for a change and it's ok so far. I've tried oatmeal with pecans and I use the all whites egg whites mixed in so I don't know there is egg in it. I can't eat it often bit I can on occasion.
  • Special K protein plus with soy milk. Also there are a lot of bagels that have a lot of protein in them.
  • Thanks for all the suggestions ladies.  I am going to try some of them.  It seems very random to me that some carbs raise my sugar and some are okay - kind of a bit of trial and error.  See what combos work and what ones don't.  @HopingforChange - the yogurt I tried was light and fit.  I have tried Greek Yogurt in the past and just couldn't get past the texture.  I will have to try it again and see if I can get used to it (at least in smoothies).

Have you tried Greek Yogurt?  It's lower in carbs than standard yogurt, even the ones with the fruit.  I found that that worked for me quite well.

**Nevermind**  Just read that you have tried the Greek yogurt.

I have the same thing.  White rice, white bread...they are wicked on my levels, but pasta and say, brown rice are ok.  And things change as my pregnancy gets further along.

  • What about ricotta or cottage cheese? I've been on a serious ricotta cheese kick lately. I used to make it mashed with strawberries or blueberries for DD1 and it is amazingly good!

Yoplait makes a Greek yogurt sweetened with Splenda. The lime flavor has only ten carbs but 14g protein. That is quite yummy. :) I also hated the plain Greek yogurt at first, but you do adapt. You can sneak a bit of unsweetened applesauce in there too, to make it more palatable.

  • I have a half whole wheat English muffin with peanut butter (globs if it) every morning. It's boring but it is actually filling and good for my numbers
