Advice on Yale-New Haven Maternity Center... panicking badly!!!!! Help!

Hello CT moms and moms-to-be. I am just 6 weeks along, but already did some poking around about Yale-NH, which is the only place where my midwife will deliver. I have already left my OB-GYN while we were TTC, as I prefer a more natural approach. We really like our midwife now and really don't want to switch again, but delivering at Yale-NH sounds anything BUT pleasant.

According to their website, there are 3 operating/delivery suites (not sure what that implies), a 3 bed recovery room (soooo after I deliver I can't even rest because I'm sharing a room with 2 other women?), and a 5 bed triage area (no thanks). I am reacting so strongly because every hospital I've ever been to for a friend or sibling's delivery has been quite the opposite: private rooms, homey appearance, quiet atmosphere.  The thought of trying to relax and deliver my baby naturally while another women is screaming on the other side of a curtain? I just can't picture it! In fact, I don't know how a hospital could even think that's okay! Maybe I'm nuts.

Can someone weigh in their experience at Yale-NH?? I'm panicking!

  • I delivered 3 years ago there and I was in a private delivery room and private recovery room for 2 days, everything was private

  • Thanks! I feel loads better. :)
  • I absolutely loved Yale. The labor and delivery room is private as is your room after you deliver. In the event you have a c section, you do go to recovery with other beds separated by a curtain. I had a great experience both times. Good luck!
  • Now that St Rays is Yale they have a brand new maternity ward at that campus that is also all suites. My docs deliver there mainly but it depends on what is going on. Also the NICU at Yale was the first in the world. I also volunteered in the NICU and the facility and nurses are amazing. I feel extra comfort knowing they are there should we require a NICU after delivery.
  • I'm delivering there in couple weeks. Had the tour all private rooms not sure where the info came from. I have no complaints about them! I wouldn't be anywhere else!! I LOVE YALE

  • Thanks everyone! It's still early, so I was going to wait a bit before going to tour, but I think it's a great idea. I have a coworker delivering there soon, too, so I will definitely pick her brain. xo
  • One more postitive review...had both babies there and loved it.
  • I loved Yale! The whole experience was fantastic!
  • Thanks again for the feedback, ladies. :) I had an appt with the midwife, who explained the process to me. She said that during recovery, yes, I may have a roommate. While it is rare and is unlikely to be an issue, if many women have delivered, I will indeed have a roommate. Yale can't promise me a private room. I don't feel great about the chance existing, but I do know it's unlikely. I really don't want to switch practices (since my practice only delivers at Yale), so I am going to pray for the best, and hope I'm not that rare first-time mom trying to recover in an uncomfortable situation! Sometimes I work myself up to be more nuts than is really necessary. :p So just trying to relax and pray it will all go smoothly! My husband and I are going to set up a tour, as well. :)

  • I did share a room on the maternity unit with DD2 - for about 6 hours until they had a free single room. They were so nice and apologetic about it. Of course, I would have preferred my own room the whole time but ot really was ok.
  • So glad to hear the positive feedback about Yale. That's where I'm planning to deliver!
  • Thanks, AllieMag24! Certainly sharing a room for a few hours I could stomach. I'm glad they were so gracious about it, too!

Has anyone else seen the Office episode where Pam has to share a recovery room, and breastfeeds the wrong baby? LOL~ That's what this invokes in my brain.

  • I just delivered there in November.  Triage rooms are private, I wanted to go as natural as possible and was given the room with the laboring tub (make sure you request it as soon as you get admitted), the nurses were AMAZING (and I had a long, intense labor), and I had a private room after. LO ended up in the NICU and the staff there was awesome as well.  My nurse from the first night was there the next day off the clock and actually stopped in to check on me and say "hi".  DONT WORRY, they take great care of you.
  • Tell them having a roommate will violate the laws that HIPAA requires them to adhere to. They don't want to compromise their status with that.
  • Thanks for more replies! A coworker of mine recently delivered by C-section at Yale (she also did about two years ago,as well). She was again pleased with the staff, facility, etc. Initially, she had a roommate for recovery. :( however, she said she was persistent with asking (begging for) if a private room was yet available, and was moved to a private the next morning. She also said the food left much to be desired! It was a let down, since the first time she delivered there, it was amazing! I'm not as much concerned about food as I am with getting some relaxation and quiet. I'll be taking a tour soon, but all of your advice has been very helpful.thanks so very much!
  • UPDATE!!! DH and I went on a tour of Yale yesterday and - wow- were we pleasantly surprised! I hadn't been impressed by a previous stay at Yale (non-pregnancy related) and was expecting labor and delivery to be as awful as where I stayed last time. Nope! Labor and Delivery was of course private, and was designed to be as homey as possible. In fact, the medical equipment was kept behind wooden cabinets and they open the doors to get things out as needed. All rooms had a shower, so even if you couldn't get the tub (which I will definitely request!), there was a private clean shower.  Beds were laboring beds, designed for any kind of position that you want to assume. There were also exercise bars and a birthing bar that can attach to the bed. Post-partum wasn't quite as aesthetically pleasing, but still very nice and comfy. They suggesting that I request a corner room, as they're larger! Yes, there were some double rooms, and they reiterated that they only double if they must.  I feel much calmer now that I've been there. I hope this post can reassure other moms who may feel leery about Yale-NH.
