Xylophone pronunciation?

DD and I were just doing an alphabet puzzle together, and the picture for X was a xylophone. I said, "That's an xylophone!" to DD and DH burst out laughing at my pronunciation.
He says it zy-lo-phone, which I don't doubt is a legitimate way of saying it. But I say EX-zy-lo-phone.... We called my parents who said that's how they say it, so obviously that's where I got it, but do any of you say it that way? Or am I alone in my family of English language butcherers?

  • Haha, well I don't disagree with DH, so you guys don't need to choose sides! I know zy-lo-phone is a common way of pronouncing it.... I'm just wondering if my way is just an oddity within my family or a wider ranging thing.

    Ditto
Sorry, Joy. I probably would have laughed, too.
  • I've only ever heard it pronounced zy-lo-phone.

  • Interesting. I love english and grammar, so I'm usually the one correcting DH, haha... it's so weird to discover a quirk in the way you speak that you never knew existed! I don't know if I'll be able to re-train myself to say it the other way...

    Zy-lo-phone. Zy-lo-phone. Zy-lo-phone....

  • I've never heard your pronunciation for any words that start with x. Why would be say the letter name? (We don't say "tee-table", or "see-car", or "bee-bus") Do you say "ex-xenophobia"? There needs to be an "e" at the beginning to say it your way.

This is why the name Xavier drives me nuts. I know so many who pronounce it "Ex-xavier", but that makes no sense.

  • Your husband is right.  There is no other way to pronounce it.
