Halloween laziness

We recently bought a house in a neighborhood with a ton of kids, and I know we're going to get a million trick-or-treaters on Halloween. There's also a half-flight of stairs between our living room and the front door, and we have a dog whose primary purpose in life is to defend the house from threatening door knocks with the power of her ferocious barks. I'm just getting exhausted thinking about the barking and the dog and the carrying the baby up and down the stairs. So here's my question: How lazy is it for me to just put a bowl of candy on the porch and periodically refill it? We have a ton of candy, so on that front I don't care if some greedy kids take more than their fair share. I don't remember if I thought the bowl-on-the-porch move was disappointing or not when I was a kid.

Go for it, but expect it to be empty more often than you'd get a door knock..... ;)
    Married DH <3 : 7/7/12; 3 fur babies (2 dogs and 1 cat)
DS born 9/3/13; DD born 7/22/15; LO due 5/28/18

  • We just bundle the kids up and sit on the steps out front. It's less stressful for the dogs and easier than constantly going to the door. Granted, we get swamped and will easily go through 1000 pieces if candy.

My kids love the bowl sitting out. They are the kids that grab a handful. Ha!

I don't see a problem with it. Although, if we were home for Halloween (older kids so we go out), I would sit outside bundled up and hand it out. I enjoy it.

ETA: I want to add, if I am up at the house (they usually run and I stay back), I don't let them grab tons. ;)

  • I have 2 dogs that are the same. I just close them in the bedroom. One year I put a sign that said "knock if you dare," or something cheesy and taped over the doorbell. The dogs hardly heard the knocks. Id just post up by the door w/ LO and have fun.
  • It's our dogs least favorite holiday! Last year I put him on the run in the back while we went trick or treating. My mom was home handing out candy and guess who busted off the run and came to the front door for candy?! Silly boy! We will probably take him with us this year.

Bowl of candy is fine or just eat the candy yourself and turn off the lights!
  • We won't be home. So we leave candy out. DH thinks one kid probably takes it all. But I've done it three years in a row and two years some candy was left (granted it wasn't the chocolate candies) but still I think parents teach kids to take their fair share and leave some for others (at least I hope they do).

This is what we did too when we lived in neighborhood. From like 6-8 and then turned the light off. It was fun and seeing the kids was great. It's the one and only thing I miss from before we moved onto the ranch.

Ooooo I may have to use the monitor! We can talk through the camera. Oh yea...I'll make a scarecrow or something and hide the camera and yell at the greedy ones. MUAHAHAHA!
