Baby Names

having second thoughts (girl name)

orignially we decided before I even got pregnant that our girl name would be Josephine Elizabeth. They are both derived from family names. I don't know why but Josephine has started sounding funny to me. I like the full name. I'm a little afraid of Josie, i just don't like it. I could get down with Joey or Jo, I think someone on this board mentioned they know someone who goes by Seph... Our LN is a single syl name that begins with S.

Am I over thinking this?

alt girl name is Alexandra Katherine
boy name is Harrison David

Re: having second thoughts (girl name)

  • I love Josephine. It would definitely be on our list if we hadn't already used it for our dog. :-) I hope that doesn't sound bad. I definitely wouldn't classify it as a "dog name" and we treat our dog like she's human. We named her for the Wallflowers song. "Josephine... you're so sweet you must taste just like sugar...and tangerines" I sing that to her all the time.

I also have friends with a daughter named Josette and my cousin's daughter is Jocelyn and they both go by Josie. I think it's adorable.

But a girl named Joey always makes me think of Dawsons Creek. That wouldn't be my first choice.

  • I think it's a pretty name and if you establish the nickname then that's what will stick. Just correct people if they say Josie. My daughter's name is Alexandra (so needless to say, I am a big fan of that name, also) and we call her Alex. When she was an infant, this lady I worked with introduced her as "Lexi". What the #^%#@???? I corrected her very quickly and she was never called that again by anyone.
  • I love Josephine and I definitely prefer it to Alexandra. I think people will take your lead on the NN thing; if you call her Jo or Joey and correct the few people who try to call her Josie, I don't think you'll have much of an issue with it.

  • I love the name Josephine, and my gut instinct wouldn't be to call someone with that name Josie.  I'm much more likely to default to Jo (maybe too much Little Women?)

  • Thanks for the reassurance. I think I just keep looking at it and thinking it that it starts to look and sound strange. And just for clarification I don't really care if she eventually wants to go by Josie. I just don't like it and won't use it.

But I agree, Lexi is VERY different than Alexandra.
@erikalynn75, I didn't even get into Dawson's creek so I don't make that association but I know others do. An no offense taken on the name. We named our dog elly. There's a ton of little girls with that name too. I'll have to look up that song you are talking about!

  • Josephine... It's BEAUTIFUL I love it!
  • I love Josephine! Not a fan of Joey for a NN, but Jo or Seph (even with an S LN) would work instead of Josie.

I do like Alexandra, too, but I would stick with Josephine.

You have some control over the NN. We love Josie as a NN but use Jo and Jo Jo as well. We get SO many compliments on the name. I was on the fence but it was a family name for DH, so I compromised. Now, I couldn't think of her as anything else.

ETA: DCP calls LO "posey" because she was constantly calling her Josie Posey. I love that, too.

  • I love Josephine! It's my mn and as a kid I want by JoJo. It has quite a few nn possibilities so I dont think anyone would jump right to Josie without you guys using it first--so it's avoidable. It's not like Katherine where lots will also Kate. Keep it your top choice!

  • Josephine is one of my favorites (from a long list)! I love love it.
I like Alexandra too because I like Alex on a girl, but not as much as I love Josephine and all it's nn's. :)
  • Stick with Josephine. It's a great choice and IMO much better than Alexandra. You can determine the NN if you are clear and consistent. Except of course for what she allows her friends to call her when she's older.

  • Love Josephine :) I think you have great options either way, but Josephine would be my pick of the two.

  • I guess I'm in the minority but I love Alexandra and definitely prefer it to Josephine.  I don't care for any of the nn's for Josephine at all    but love Alex, Ali, Andra, Andie etc (except lexi!)
  • Josephine is such a great name...I would stick with it! As long as you call her Jo, everyone else will follow suit!

  • PS You're not overthinking it! Choosing a name is REALLY important and you owe it to your kid to overthink it :)

  • Love Alexandra Kathryn....it's my #2 girl name, and I'll use it if we ever have two girls :-)  I also like Elizabeth for a middle name, it's what we'll use for a middle name with girl #1 (if that's what happend :-) ), but Josephine is NMS.
