carpal tunnel - numb hands?

I know we're SO over carpal tunnel questions - sorry!

I've been mostly able to control my carpal tunnel with braces and stretches.  The last few days, however, my left hand has fallen asleep, and I can't fully wake it up.  I am going to the chiropractor this afternoon, hoping he can help me, but has anyone else had this?

I'm wondering if the chiro doesn't help, should I go back to my ortho?  They originally told me that they didn't want to do anything (read: cortisone shot) until 3 months after baby is born, unless it gets "much worse" - is constant asleep "much worse"?  I don't even know if cortisone would help this.  I can't imagine trying to function like this for 4 more months! It doesn't really hurt, just feels asleep, but I keep dropping things, and my hand feels much more swollen (the ring I'm wearing in place of my wedding ring is now tight and bothers my hand :( )

And, yes, I am asking my dr about this tonight - just wondering if anyone has personal experiences.

Re: carpal tunnel - numb hands?

  • I have the same thing going on with my right hand.  It's tingly and numb and I can't grip anything to save my life.  I really have no advice.  My OB told me that this should subside within 2-3 weeks after I deliver.  I'm just sitting tight with a numb hand hoping he's right.
oh - that's good.  I haven't talked to my OB yet (seeing her on Thurs) - but all my mom friends said their wrist problems got worse after delivery for a few months, which makes me nervous.

I'm so afraid I'm gonna drop the baby! :-S

  • I have it both hands and they are constantly numb.  I have learned to use them and not really on touch/feeling if that makes sense.  I am more careful when I pick things up...I have broken many glasses and plates....They did not want to intervene due to the baby so I have lived through it for the past 3 months.  Good luck.  i  am told it goes away after birth,,

  • I just started getting this the last week or two-- I've never had carpal tunnel issues before.  My hands fall asleep much easier and my right hand is sometimes numb/tingly and when I move it certain ways-- like twisting to open jars and stuff-- it sometimes sending a shooting sensation (not really pain--- more like shock??) up my arm.  I asked my MW about it and she also said it's probably from all the hormones-- especially since the relaxin ramps up the last couple weeks to make your hips, etc. more mobile for delivery.  Mine is only occasional so she suggested I see an ortho or other specialist if it doesn't go away a few weeks after delivery.

  • I also have carpal tunnel. IT SUCKS! I asked my OB too of course and he said will subside after delivery. I have the same fears of "what if I drop the baby" or "what if I can't even put clothes on her or change her diaper". I'm really hoping it goes away sooner than what your Dr. told you. I work an office job and during the day my right hand kills from typing and using a computer mouse. I wish I had some awesome advice for you but I'm in the same camp.

I wear my braces at night and that helps, but I don't know how else to make it "better".:(

  • talking to the massage therapist (yes, my chiropractor has a massage therapist), she said that as your front gets bigger, it pulls down on your shoulders, especially if you have bad posture  O:-), and can cut off circulation in your hands.

My shoulders were REALLY tight, especially my left shoulder.  The chiropractor also got a really good adjustment in my neck and upper back.

As of right now, my hand feels SO much better!  We'll see how it goes tonight (it tends to fall asleep more at night).
