Babies on the Brain

Overthinking and Worried

Welp. My family history is a lot of endometriosis and infertility peppered around. My mom had to have a hysterectomy at 28, after conceiving my brothers and I (all together about 10yrs of fertility treatments.  So when I first got my period, its been anything but predictable since I've been 14. Once I was hemorrhaging so bad I had to be admitted to the hospital to get it to stop. Ive been on every birthcontrol trying to control it. Which leads me to my IUD. Its the 1st thing that's  kept my period in check in the last 4years (im 28yo). And in the last year, since January I've been like clockwork.

So now to my point: I seem to be a couple days late give or take. My husband says I'm overthinking, but my worry is that if I'm pregnant its a high risk one because of my IUD :( theyd have to pull it out and possibly terminate it. I have been nauseous for the better part of last week and threw some weird clot the other day.  My emotions are just strung out right now worried, I suppose. I have taken a pregnancy test a couple days ago and it was negative.  Since my period usually comes at the end of the month, I'm probably taking another in the next couple of days.

I guess I'm just worried and sad, that we both want children. Just within the next year or so. And with my family history,  it might be hard to conceive. And if I am, and Id have to lose it because of the IUD removal

I suppose,  I wonder if anyone has ever had a successful pregnancy after IUD removal if it wasnt ectopic to begin with?

Re: Overthinking and Worried

  • You didn't say what kind of IUD you have but one thing to keep in mind is that although it physically seems like it is regulating your cycles, that is not what is really going on. It uses hormones to make you have a false period each month.

No one can ease your mind over the internet. Even though it is very scary, you should try to take a test and see what the result is. You probably are not pregnant but experiencing more complications related to the other issues you have had in the past.

If I were you (and I'm not, so I don't know what works best for you) I would have a long conversation with DH about how important children are for you. If having a biological child is important at all to you you should be working closely with a doctor, going off of any hormonal form of birth control, and getting to know your body. Charting and practicing natural family planning while using a barrier method would be best so you can try to learn if you are ovulating. I know it is scary, but it is always better to be armed with all the the information you can.

  • @joy2611 - I need to learn more about them then. Sorry to open my big mouth when I was obviously wrong!

I guess I am confused how in the world an IUD, if it works as you said, would regulate a menstrual cycle? OP says she was very irregular since 14 but since having the IUD, she has been "like clockwork". Is this just a fluke? Trying to learn more I suppose because I was so off base in how I thought they worked.

To OP - I still stand by my recommendation that you should find a great OBGYN and start natural family planning to learn more about yourself and understand fertility limitations you might have. Considering your family history and irregularity since your period started, you should try to be proactive about this even though I am sure it is nerve wracking.
  • OP-- I know it can be difficult-- but you really have to try to relax.  Chances are about 99% that you are not pregnant.

Are you and your H ready to TTC right now?  If yes, have your IUD removed and see what happens.  There's absolutley no reason to think you are going to have a problem getting pregnant because your mother did-- or even because you have had unpredictable periods.

Unpredictable periods might make timing more difficult, but not the actual getting pregnant part.

    Good luck.

Mostly I would chalk it up to paranoia but nausea to the point of vomiting has me side eyeing my IUD. Im never able to check if its still in place cus my arms are stumpy for 5"5.

And yeah, I have an appointment with my OB/GYN to talk planning. The hubby and I kinda feel like we might take the IUD (mirena) out in the next 6months give or take. Hopefully we wont run into any major problems TTC.

Yeah, I don't have an answer that, actually.  I've heard of women having lighter periods or no periods, but regulating seems beyond its (normal) capabilities.

Ive never had a regular period my whole life until the IUD. I was taking hormonal treatments and everything. We're talking bleeding for 8 months straight and then nothing for a year, them 3-4months with a week of nothing back to 6months. The worst I was, was a pad every 40min., thats when I was admitted to the hospital with a hemoglobin count of 7.2

I was told I'd have to have a D&C if my uterine lining didnt shed (from the long periods of having no periods) so my Dr suggested the IUD to force it. For the first time in ever, my periods were coming once a month for 8-10days. Except sometime last year when it went away til the beginning of this year. Now I had been getting them every month exactly between 25th/28.
  • Wow, I definitely learned something new!

I hope you get all of this figured out. I agree with other posters that the likelihood that you are pregnant is very slim. You are just over thinking it. If it makes you feel any better, just make an appointment with your gyn. and go in for a check. It never hurts to be too careful!
