She said some kids don't need it (this was the nurse). What do you think? Should I give him a 1/2 dropper beforehand or not?? I want to listen to the ped, but I don't want my munchkin to be in major pain either!
I've always heard it helps, but I would hate to over rule your pedi. However, never ever forget that YOU are the mom. If you don't feel comfortable, speak up.
It didn't help DS until AFTER he got his 2 month shots. He was still in a ton of pain during and I had to give it after to relieve the poor little guy.

Finally after 15 months and 2 IUI's we have our gorgeous baby boy!
Born Nov. 13th @ 9:09am after 29 hours of labor!
6 lbs 1 oz 20 inches long
My little angel born Jan 9th, 2010 at 9:54pm after 25 hours of labor!
7lbs 4 oz 20 inches long
i never give it until we get to the office & find out how much he weighs because it's a weight based medication... if i do it as soon as they weigh him, it's usually a good half an hour before the shots are given.
There was an article on here yesterday about acetaminophen use in the first year correlating with higher asthma rates.
I think you should wait and see how your LO handles the shots--he may not need any Tylenol. We didn't need to use any Tylenol after the 2 month shots. I think with a young baby, it's better to avoid medication unless they really need it.

Why give drugs if you don't have to? That's like taking cold medicine, incase you're gonna get a cold. It doesn't make sense in my opinion.
I didn't give DS any Tylenol after his 4 month shots. He wasn't in pain. All babies are going to cry when they get the shot, but not all are going to hurt afterwards.

I agree with this... also it doesnt help during them... maybe afterwards but not always.

Iris, I feel the same way. I was leary to give it to him anyway, but I just thought YOU ALWAYS DID, no matter what. So, I was confused, but we will wait. I also knew it was weight based, but most people on here have to give .4ml for a 12ish pounder like C is. Hmmm...
I was told by my pedi not to because he wanted to see Ike without interference from the Tylenol. I guess to rule out illness or fever before giving him shots, then afterward i didn't give it to him until that night (we had an 8:30am appt) because THAT'S when he started to get a low grade fever. GL!
My pedi said it was to counter any side effects not that it helps with the actual pain of the injection. She said to only give it if the baby was getting a fever or extra fussy afterwards. I've tried both giving it beforehand and not and I never noticed a difference in how my children have reacted.

DS had his yesterday and we didn't give any beforehand and they said only to give it to him afterwards if we notice he has a fever. I've had to give him some cause he was feeling kind of warm last night but what I did for the shots that helped instead of Tylenol was right after he got them I gave him a bottle and that calmed him right down. He wailed for about a minute really loud and I teared up (dh held him during shots).

I never did before. She's handled them like a champ, cried when she got them and sleeps the whole way home and not real fussy afterwards. The 4 months she was, I think it was the nurse that gave them to her, she was awful, I gave her tylenol then.
But the other day after her 6 months, didn't have to.
I would wait and see how he is afterwards. It doesn't take long to kick in if he is uncomfortable!
I've never given either of my kids pain meds before their shots. I just wait to see if the shots seem to be bothering them or not. Sometimes they seem like they need it, sometimes not.
They can't give certain shots if they are running a fever. If you give Tylenol and it hides the fever you could cause more problems for DS. With it being the cold and flu season maybe this is why she said not to give.
I always give it to my DC before their shots. Of course I give it after they weight so I can be accurate on the dosage. If I forget my dropper I ask the doctor to order it for DC and the nurse will bring it in. My pedi has never mentioned anything about not giving it to DC.
I always do, it seems to help him a lot. We went shopping today after his shots. And then later in the day I give him another dose if he seems to need it. I doubt it will hurt him, but listen to your Mommy instincts.

My pedi said that he wouldn't need it for the two month shots but that I could give them before the four month if I wanted to. He was fine without them for the two month. I don't think some tylenol would have numbed the pain of the shots anyway and you would hate to cover up a fever or something beforehand. You can always give them later if you want to.
I would...and I did. pedi suggested it. I gave before though because ds is knocked out for about 2 hours after his shots :-(
also I want to point out that dh and I got our tetanus shot and then our flu shot a week later....the spot where I was given the tetanus shot was STILL sore when I went to get the flu shot. now I know babies aren't given quite as much as adults but they are still getting quite a few shots at once so I have to imagine that they are also pretty sore at the injection site...just a thought!
good luck!
