Snack Ideas

I know we have food discussions pretty regularly, but I need new snack ideas. My go to options are raisins, craisins, apple, banana, grapes, wheat crackers, and cheese. I want to get more healthy options because he doesn't eat great at meals so I have to get nutrition in where I can. I have tried hummus and he will pick at it but isn't thrilled.

  • What about just chick peas? DD loves them straight out of the can, black beans too!

  • Hard boiled eggs, pb toast, granola, nuts, avacodo, cheese, lunch meat, fruit pouches.

    On a related note I feel like a bad mom, we don't really snack.

  • Ps... I found once we cut out most snacks my kids eat better meals, and snacks are seated at the table just like meals or most kids will never learn to sit and eat a meal.

  • Bellelamb - I wish we didn't snack. DS doesn't eat well at meals then begs for snack food all day. I try to limit it to one snack midmorning and one mid afternoon. I like the idea of making him sit at the table. I make him sit down on the floor but maybe if he is strapped to his booster seat it won't be as much fun.
  • DD doesn't snack much but when she does she usually has puffs, string cheese, apples, bananas, whole wheat crackers, and blueberries.

    DD loves meat and I've been wanting to buy her some lunch meat to snack on since I don't always have cooked meat on hand, but I know how unhealthy many of the brands are.  @nlynch11- you mentioned that you serve a nitrate free deli meat to your LO. Does anyone have any good brands that I can try?

  • Grape tomatoes might be a good option since they can be quite sweet. Actual grapes, too. Additionally, Fifi loves seasoned seaweed (except the wasabi ones, ha ha). She eats them right out of the package. This weekend she tried and liked pomegranate seeds. We've lucked out thus far that she doesn't really like cake, cookies, or candy. I'm sure this will change but I'll take the healthy snaking habits as long as we can.

  • I HIGHLY recommend strapping kids in or sitting at the table while eating! Teaching kids to eat at specific times and places helps a lot as they get older and enter school. Plus it helps with work on table manners.
