Cold nursery in winter time.

We got snow now and it's cold. LO's nursery is cold and I find she is waking up more now in the night because of it. I have found her hands really cold. I already have her in a fleece sleeper, fleece sleep sack and the heat is at 73. Our bedroom is hot but hers not as much. We leave her door open too and ours too.
Any suggestions for keeping LO warm without blankets?

Re: Cold nursery in winter time.

  • Our nursery gets really cold too. The bedrooms are on the north side of our house and we live in Minnesota.

We have been running a space heater for about 20 mins before she goes to sleep. Also she has unfortunately been waking up twice per night so I usually run it then as well. I think the noise helps her fall asleep too.

We have a digital clock that displays room temp which has been really helpful.

Just a thought since you are dressing her so warm, have you checked her core to see if she might be too warm? Even if her hands are cold she might be too warm. I could definitely be wrong but I'd think with two layers of fleece and keeping your house above 70 she'd be plenty warm.

  • We just bought an infrared heater for C's room, but even at 72, his hands are cold in the mornings. Like Boo said, you may want to check her core...she may be toastier than you think.

  • We went to a long sleeved onesie, under a fleece sleeper and a cotton sleep sack because the nursery seems drafty and his little arms were so cold. He seems to be sleeping better now. I didn't want to do two layers of fleece, thought that would be too warm on the body so opted for the extra layer on the arms. That seems to have helped.

  • Our nursery is around 65. I have her in a long sleeve onsie, fleece sleeper and cotton sleepsack. Her hands are still cold in the morning. I think it's unavoidable, but it bothers me too.

  • Our room is about 21 degrees celcius (about 66?). It cal fall to 19degrees during the night. We dress her in a onesie, cotton sleeper and sleep sack (2.9 tog). Her body is nice and warm but her hands are cold.

It makes me uncomfortable that her hands are cold too but I don't want to overheat her.

  • M's hands and feet are usuall cool but the rest of her is warm. I agree with PPs-- she may be warmer than you think and I wouldn't want to add any more layers or heat to her.

  • I agree w/ PPs, if her core is warm, she's probably OK.  What about a hat?  Sometimes I find my LO sleeps better with something on his head.  If she's still cold, maybe add another layer under the sleeper.  Just be careful not to overheat.
  • I try to keep his room at 70 - a happy medium between everything I read, and what I *think* is a comfortable temp. I've been putting him in a fleece footie pjs and leaving his door open with the living room heat on (his rooms right off the living room) and in the morning the temp egg says 70. His hands are cool but his belly is not.
  • You may want to get thermal PJs from the Gap for under the sleepers. Carter's has a fleece sleep sack that is nice that is also available in their Target and Walmart lines. For whatever reason be it Carter's, a store that carries Carter's, or even Walmart those babies tend to sell out fast.

  • The recommended temp for a baby's room at night is 60-68 degrees, with the optimal temp being 64-65 degrees. It is fine if their hands are cold as long as their core is warm.

This. We have a gro-egg which tells us the temp in her room and it changes colors depending on the temp. It's a happy yellow when it drops to 67 (or was it 68?). S only sleeps in a cotton or terry footed sleeper, no sleep sack or blanket or anything else, and we have the ceiling fan going for circulation. Her hands sometimes gets cold, but if you feel her belly, it's quite toasty. Our pedi always says that no baby froze to death from cold hands and feet, so as long as their core is warm to the touch, they're doing just fine.

  • I will have to check her neck and see if she is warm. Thanks for the tips everyone. Her room also faces north and when that wind picks up its cold. -40c isn't going to be fun this winter with a LO I can already tell.

  • I am always worried about my LO being cold to.

My pediatrician said that the house she be around 75 (which was in the summer) so I have been putting the heat on about 73. She sleeps in a onzee, cotton or terry footie pj's and cotton sleep sack and I also put light socks on her. If I were doing a fleece sleeper I wouldn't use the sleep sack.

  • I put lo in footed cotton pjs and a fleece sleep sack. Our place is probably in the low 70s at night and the ac is set at 77. I should probably rethink the sleep sack.

  • We have our house set at 69, but his room is one of the warmer rooms.  He sleeps in a onsie, sleeper, and a Halo sleepsack (either fleece or velboa).  Sometimes I put socks under his sleeper, and I have some long sleeve onsies but he's been doing okay with the short sleeve ones.  Definitely no loose blankets, but I find it works well to add more layers under the sleepsack.  Often his little hands will be cool to the touch, but body temp for a baby should be judged by the back of the neck not fingers or toes.

  • T sleeps in a cotton footed sleeper and a fleece sleepsack. I am always unsure if he's too cold or hot. I ordered a room thermometer to help put my mind at ease with the temp.
