Torticollis

Is anyone here dealing with this? My 7 week old was diagnosed with moderate torticollis this week. It was at my insistence that something was wrong that our pedi then sent us to a physical therapist who made the diagnosis. She will be seen 2x per week and they gave us a bunch of stretches to do at home. They said she will most likely need therapy until she is crawling, but we should be able to correct it esp since we caught it so early. I just wanted to share our story because our pedi wasn't overly concerned because she can look in both directions and had no problems doing so when he evaluated her. She can already roll tummy to back, so she does have mobility. I just noticed that she ALWAYS has her head in the same position when sleeping, sitting in her bouncy seat, swing, etc. As a STM, my son developed a slight flat spot at 4 months, so I wanted to be proactive with her. I'm very glad I spoke up!

Re: Torticollis

  • I'm not dealing with it, but I'm a PT so I understand where you are coming from.  You def did the right thing by being proactive.  It's so much easier to treat something that is new as opposed to waiting 6 months or a year.. You generally get better results, too!  Doctors in general aren't that good at picking up when PT is appropriate, so don't be afraid to speak up!  Good luck with your LO.. I'm sure everything will be fine!

  • I don't have direct dealing with this with LO but my mom was diagnosed with this as an adult. It took years of appts and finally going to Mayo clinic to get it diagnosed. I'm glad you are working on this and were proactive. We've had other medical issues where dr. Dismissed us but I followed my gut and they were real issues. Good job mom! Hope therapy goes well.

Our 10 week old was diagnosed last week... Our story is very similar to yours! We have been doing the exercises/stretches and start PT 2x week in a few weeks. I hope we are able to get it resolved without any problems. I'm glad it was discovered at this early of an age. We are repositioning him around the clock, increased tummy time, and are doing everything to work towards correcting the issue. Happy thoughts to you!
