3yo and 4.5yo talking levels?

Hi I occasionally watch a family friends kids they are 3 and 4.5 years old. I find at times they are impossible to understand! I can only understand a few phrases such as asking for a snack or a drink. I'm partially convinced they are speaking another language!

I don't have children yet (8months pregnant now) so I don't quite know milestones for talking and behavior but I just have a feeling something is not right with these kids! I don't think the parents notice and I've even joked with them "is he (4.5yo) speaking French because I have no clue what he just said" and they have no response other than "ya idk he never makes sense". I also feel that the 3 year old is somewhat easier to understand and even then it's all babble with only a few clear words. It's getting to the point that I hate watching the kids because I feel that something is off with them and have no idea if I'm right or wrong and how I would go about talking to the parents about seeking a professional opinion....

Re: 3yo and 4.5yo talking levels?

  • It's tough. If they have a genuine concern, they should bring it up to the pediatrician but I think sometimes if you're not around other kids, you don't always recognize when your kid is seemingly behind in something because unless it's glaringly obvious, the spectrum of what's normal in the various forms of development is quite broad. I understand probably 95% of what my son says (he's newly 3) but other people often look to me to translate because they can't understand what he's saying. Is the 4 1/2 year old in pre-school or any other programs where a teacher might recognize a speech delay?
