Drool rash

I'm not going so far as to say Ty is teething (I ran around for almost 6 months excusing all of DS1's fussiness on teething but he didn't pop a tooth until 8 months) BUT he is drooling like crazy, has ruby red cheeks, and drool rash.

Dr. Google has informed me I can use a Lanolin cream on his skin and try to keep it dry, but I was wondering if you ladies had any success with a product you can recommend.

Plz note: I am not concerned enough to see a doctor

Re: Drool rash

  • Baby J has had a drool rash on and off for the last two weeks or so. First time I rubbed a bit of lanolin on it when I put him to bed and it helped a bit. Second time I tried a little breastmilk earlier in the night and lanolin again at bed. Seemed to clear it up.

  • @jillsee thanks! He's always chomping on his hand so I was just worried it would be consumed more than treat it. And I squirt him in the face almost everytime he eats because that's his new fun game...

  • We've recently developed this too.  I tried lotion but it doesn't seem to help.  I'll have to try the lanolin.

Do ruby red cheeks indicate teething?  I've noticed this more in the past two days as well.

  • My guy has red cheeks and tons of saliva too. I'll try the lanolin tonight. The lotion hasn't been cutting it over here.

  • I haven't done anything for her rash, it just comes and goes (I feel like such a neglectful mom lol). Question about the red cheeks: DD woke up a couple days ago with very red cheeks and the next day only one was still red. But her skin also feels dry on her cheeks, do you think it's teething or just from the cold weather? I tried putting a little Vaseline on them tonight to see if it helps.

  • Just as a heads up, what I thought was a drool rash turned into a yeast infection (mom of the year over here) that has been really hard to get rid of. Because of that I would be careful with putting breast milk on it. My pedi gave me a script, but he also said keep it clean, dry, and use Vaseline between rx applications.

  • Lanolin works wonders for redness from drool, I used to put it on DD1's face right before bed.

  • Our pedi recommended aquaphor/Vaseline for the rashes. I use it when her cheeks get really rough and irritated after baths. It seems to help a bit.
  • Wait, no one has suggested coconut oil yet? Where am I?!

    Hahaha!!
But seriously though...try coco oil. It is magical.

  • @jo27key @zigspective are you talking about the coconut oil in the cooking aisle at the grocery store? Or the hair care kind? Or does it matter, both work?
  • I buy the huge tub of it from costco. The cooking kind. It will probably last us until E is in college.

  • I use baby aquaphor at bedtime once he's swaddled so I know it stays in place. If I did it during the day it would just end up in his mouth. My poor LO's cheeks are so red too!

Hopefully she won't still need it for that by then! ;-)

Aquaphor is our go to for baby related owies.
Second Aquaphore! I read that you should clean their cheeks first before putting anything on with warm water and pat dry - make sure they are completely dry before applying - so you don't trap bacteria and moisture underneath next to the skin. It can make it worse.

  • I was putting a little Burt's Bees chapstick on her chin at diaper changes and that seemed to help.  Pedi also suggested Vaseline.

Another convert here. My pedi actually recommended coco oil for drool rash because she she says it ok if baby accidentally ingests it. I also use it as a diaper cream.  I bought the unrefined organic Whole Foods brand over 3 months ago and I still have tons left. It works like a charm every time.
