Ds will be 7 in 2 months and is in a five point harness Diono. I think we are ready to take the harness off and use a belted booster. He is 51 lbs and 48 inches. Too early or is he the only 1st grader ins harness still
My 7.5 yr olds still use a booster. It has a back also. KS law is 8 yrs old AND a certain height and/or weight. They recently took an after school acting class where they rode in another vechicle to the facility. I was the only parent dropping booster seats off and there were quite a few kids in their grade so it seems like I am in the minority.
I don't remember what seat DS1 had, but I kept him in the 5pt as long as I could. DS2 is in a Graco Nautilus. He is in kindergarten and we'll max out the 5pt harness.

I don't remember which booster seat DD had one, it was a Graco one I bought at Walmart for like $30. It was backless, and just sat in the seat. She sat in that thing until a couple of months ago, and she is 9. The law in Colorado is 8 years old, and 100 Ibs.

She's saying her kid is still in a 5 point harness and wants to move to a booster. My kids 2.5 so I have nothing helpful.
So I answered my kids use a booster with a link to said booster. Ok with you?
Sure. It is the internet and people can post whatever they want. It was just confusing when you said "my 7.5 y.o. still uses a booster" and OP is talking about her nearly 7 y.o. moving into a booster. It sounded like you thought she was asking about moving out of a booster. It would've made more sense to me, in relation to the OP, if you said my 7.5 y.o. is already in a booster.

We moved DD1 to a HBB at 5 years (44 lbs and 46"). She rides in a Recaro Vivo or Recaro ProBooster mainly. At 7 yo (58 lbs, 52") she occasionally rides in a backless booster too.
ETA: The best practice booster use is until 4'9". That's the height when an adult belt starts fitting correctly by itself. DD1 is super tall, and she still won't hit that until probably 9-10 years. I'm often surprised by the number of kids not using a booster at all at 7-8 years. (The law here is 8 years or 80 lbs or >4'9".)

Sorry if my question is confusing- I have him in a 5 pt harness and want to take off the harness and use a high back belted booster- same seat just no harness
DS2 has asked when he can use just the belt with the high back. He wants to be like his older siblings. I know he meets the requirements, but the 5pt is still safer. I see no point in unhooking the harness on our seat until we have to. I haven't measured him in a while, but he is over 48" and still meets the requirements to use the harness.
The radian tends to be outgrown in booster mode the same time as harnessed mode so it is unlikely you will be able to max the seat out in harness mode and then use it as a booster. I did have a link with an article but can't find it now but here is a link to the carseat.org forums where someone explains why.

But to answer your question we moved our daughter into a high back booster at 6.5 years old. She was mature enough to sit correctly 100% of the time and has done well. She will remain boostered until likely 11-12 years old at her size.
He was in a Graco Turbobooster then. He's 10 now and rides in a Harmony Youth/LiteRider that is a bit tight in the hips, but I'm holding out until the Incognito comes out (soon!) before buying a newer booster.
Diono Radians are pretty much unusable as boosters. The 50lb minimum weight, it's outgrown by height in booster mode around the same time it's outgrown by height in harness mode, the seatbelt often won't retract if the child moves forward then goes back into position (not safe!)... It's an excellent harness seat, but if you're ready - and your kiddo is ready to always stay in position - to switch to a booster I would buy a dedicated booster.
High back boosters are great for nappers or just comfort. My 10 year old goes back into a high back for long car trips. Depending on your budget, you can go all out or get one fairly cheaply.
E terrible in seats, she was harness in her Frontier but she's too tall now. She just uses it as a booster, but needs to sit properly. She'll use it until she outgrows it, which is somewhere around 5' tall, when the adult belt will fit her.
My 8 year old is harnessed in a Britax Frontier, my 10 year old just moved into a booster a couple weeks ago from a Britax Regent and my almost 6 year old is still rearfacing in a Chicco Nextfit, Diono Radian and a Clek Foonf.
The law there is 100 lbs? Wow! That is crazy. There are adults that don't even weigh 100 lbs. I think in Louisiana it is 60 lbs. I may be wrong though.
