Potentially stupid allergy question

I bf, but at one point I put a little formula in with LOs oatmeal. He developed a rash on his chest and face, so I assumed a milk allergy (both my brother and I were allergic as babies) and stopped using it. Question: do you think the yogurt blend stuff is off-limits? Wasn't sure about how yogurt was cultured and if it would be okay. Also wasn't sure when he might grow out of the allergy (assuming he has one). My bro and I drink a TON of milk now (and did growing up) so for us it definitely wasn't a permanent issue.

Re: Potentially stupid allergy question

  • I would assume its not a milk allergy if you bf and are consuming milk yourself daily and it's never been a problem. Anything else different in your lo diet? Was the oatmeal introduced before with no problems?

I consumed dairy the entire time I BF DS1 and he never reacted to it in my milk, but has a very severe dairy allergy.

OP - I would keep LO away from dairy until you have an allergy test done.  You don't want to mess around with it if it is a dairy allergy, as reactions tend to get more severe after further exposure.  Next time you could wind up in the ER.  Have your pedi refer you to an allergist for testing to rule out dairy.  Yogurt is not safe.

Did the formula also contain soy?  corn products?  It really could have been anything in the formula that he reacted to, so I would bring a can of whatever you gave him to the pedi and allergist so they can look at it and try to rule stuff out.

As far as outgrowing the allergy goes, everything I've read says that 80% of children will outgrow their dairy allergy before Kindergarten age.  Unfortunately my six-year-old is in the unlucky 20% :(

  • Also, our allergist said to check allergies, during the early years about once a year. My point being, he doesn't expfct and to go away within a year of it appearing.
