I swear he is trying to smother himself!

I never leave C unattended with a blanket. That being said, he really seems to prefer falling asleep with one...over his face.

You know how Wonder Weeks says they're supposed to pull a cloth away from their face by now? C does great with that, if you put said cloth on his face to begin with. If given anything soft just to hold (blanket, stuffed animal, etc.), he immediately pulls it over his face and smooshes it around. If I lay him on the bed while I get dressed, he wriggles around until he can grab a pillow and drag it over his face.

He'll thrash in his crib for an hour, trying to get comfy. Give him a blanket? It goes over his face and he's asleep within two minutes....then it takes forever for us to extract the blanket from his clenched little fists without waking him.

Is this normal?

  • My LO does that too! Although he eventually moves it off. We do let him sleep with a lovey though because it really helps him. He rubs it against his face but usually ends up with it under his arm. We move it away to be just near his hand when we we go to bed and definitely move it if he keeps it on his face.

His pedi approved the lovey for his crib - it's the angel dear brand.

  • Ds1 LOVED having a love on his head. I would put it over his head up to his eyebrows so his eyes, mouth and nose were exposed then take it off when he fell asleep. He was attached to his stuffed animal very early too. He likes to cuddle.
  • Yea. I left a lovie in with him one day and he had it plastered to his face! I had to pry it away. My mom said "aww, he was snuggling" but I've been too paranoid to let him have it since. DH was mad I had let him have it at night.

  • I have a little zebra lovey (I had to look that word up) that he really likes, but I don't know when I'll be able to trust actually leaving it in there with him. We use a Breathable Baby bumper (since he also likes to roll up against the crib slats), and apparently they also make "breathable" stuffed animals. I'm skeptical, but maybe he'd like one of those and I wouldn't have to watch him every second while he falls asleep?

  • Maybe this is a little too redneck for you, but what if you gave him just a small length of large weave mesh with a finished edge as a blanket? Or maybe a very loosely woven knit blanket.

Lexie does this to an extent- she usually ends up sucking on the fabric. We put her to bed in a half swaddle, so she can't get the material up to her face.

  • Add us to the "determine to smother" club. Anything fleecy he loves. We have some kind of duck/platypus/giraffe lovey we got as a gift that he has to have at bedtime. He's been good about not having it in his face too much. He loves the minky feel so I ordered a fitted minky crib sheet in the hope he'll love that
  • Yes LO loves her lovey...I really think it helps her go to sleep for naps and she rubs it all over her face. I have to sit and watch her in the monitor and I'm running in and out of her room pulling it off of her head. She doesn't get it at night though.

Hahaha, true...perhaps I can cinch him up in my laundry bag! ;)

  • Totally normal. My cousin's baby can only fall asleep if her face is covered so they put her comforter over her face (they take it off when she's asleep). Sounds terrible, I know.

If they're out and about they get some terrible looks from people but she screams unless you cover her face.

    That makes me feel better.

  • C does this as well. I thought it was the night light near her crib that was bothering her so I moved it and she still does it. I too have an epic battle to extract it from her angry fists. Now I place it over her eyes and leave her mouth exposed and hold her hand while she falls asleep. That way once she is asleep I can just lift the cloth off.
