Oatmeal fail - keep trying, add fruit or wait?

DS is 5 months and I decided to get started trying baby oatmeal. Well, he's not into it. And I know it'll take some getting used to. I've tried various ways -- after a bottle, after about an hour of having a bottle, runny, on the thicker side. Each time, he turns his head, makes a grossed-out face, fusses and is not having it at all. I've heard some say to take a break for a week or so -- he's not ready, but then I've had other people tell me to try mixing it with banana or something.

I don't mean to be so by the book, but I know most stuff out there says to introduce fruits and vegetables after they've "mastered cereal" and well... he definitely hasn't. Should I keep trying with the plain oatmeal hoping he'll warm up to it, should I just ease off altogether and try again in a month? Or should I try to sweeten the deal by adding some fruit?

  • If he turns his head and is not interested at all I'd drop it and try again in a week.

  • It took my LO about 7 days or so of trying for him to get the hang of it. And actually I ended up getting the baby oatmeal with bananas in it and then he ate it. And now LOVES it. So I don't know if it was the banana flavor that did the trick or he just got used to it. I can't shovel it in fast enough now.

This. He may end up just not liking it.

  • Take this with a grain of salt, because clearly I'm not doing anything by the book. We alternate spoonfuls of carrots or sweet potatoes, which C likes, with spoonfuls of oatmeal (this is after checking each food individually for a reaction). He doesn't like oatmeal plain, but if I alternate it, the most protest I get is a raised eyebrow and a "WTF, Ma?" look.

  • They will refuse food at first but maybe try again in a week? Also I found mixing BM in with the cereal at first made it much more familiar to her. And the consistency was extremely runny to be as close to breast milk as I could get.

  • My LO hated oatmeal, will only eat rice cereal.

  • Wait a couple days and try again.  It took mine about a week or so to get used to it and now loves it. For sure make sure they are not hungry when attempting to give it to them.
  • We added fruit without any issue almost right from the start.   The other thing is that we had to teach LO to take the spoon by demonstrating it to him.   Basically I would open my mouth really wide and take a bite.  He started to imitate it eventually.  If he is having a fussy day, I will have my DH and him eat at the same time and I make DH exaggerate the eating process (big mouth, lots of Ahs and Ums) and LO starts to eat too.

  • We tried to give LO oatmeal and rice cereal for about a month and she never would eat it. Like OP I tried it warm, cold, runny, thick, in her high chair, sitting with DH, early morning, late afternoon...everything. Finally I tried sweet potatoes, she loves them and have never looked back. I dont think she like the texture of them. And since there is no nutritional value to them I saw no reason to try and force them in her.

  • Interesting...our pedi said to skip cereal altogether so we've jumped straight to fruits and veggies. He told us it doesn't matter the color, type, or how long we give it to her either. We've only just started last night, but we went straight to green beans. She only took a couple bites and we don't want the container to go to waste, so we'll be doing more green beans tonight, but maybe unless your pedi explicitly said to start with cereal, you could try something else? I don't know if it matters or not, but S is going to be 6 months in a week, so that could also be why our pedi was more okay with us jumping straight in...
