WWYD re: Formula Fail (long, but I need your help)

Hi Guys! So, if you read my Formula Fail post from last night, you know we had a rocky start to formula feeding after EPing. Now I've lost all my confidence and I would love some help making the next decision. Today is a new day though (thanks @klj3), and Lex had her regular BM bottle this morning (I'm surprised she lasted as long as she did considering she went to bed 10 oz shy of her usual intake. Still slept until 7:30.), but the next one needs to be some kind of formula option. What do you think I should do?

Some additional info: Lex declined both BM and formula bottles last night, so maybe she just wasn't hungry, though she didn't make faces and cry at the BM bottles- just didn't eat them. She doesn't have a temperature and was otherwise acting normally yesterday. This morning she's a little more sleepy/less playful than usual, but still seems well. Ideally, we don't want to have to mix BM and formula, but I will do whatever makes this transition work. Also, she took a 4 oz of formula totally find yesterday morning, it was the evening bottle she refused. We used the Wal Mart brand of Similac Advance but I also have an unopened can of regular Similac Advance if that might make a difference. FWIW, we would love for her to take the Wal Mart brand since it's so much cheaper, but again we will do what works.

4 oz of formula only- maybe last night was a fluke

3 oz BM and 2 oz formula mix- not ideal for us, but if it works, I'll do it

BM only today and take a break until introducing formula again

Try a different brand of formula

  • When I was stopping pumping I gradually turned hit to just formula. It didn't take long to wean him off. Also she may have not been as hungry yesterday due to the fact that formula sticks with then longer. Hope it all works out for you today and she will take the formula for you!

I'd say try just the formula bottle again. If she refuses it then at least you're not wasting BM. You can always try later a mixed bottle.

Edit: Addt'l thought. Try a pack of the Similac Supplementation that come in 2oz ready made. Honestly it's the only formula Reed will take by itself. An 8 pack is only $7.99 so it's not like you'll be wasting a whole expensive cans worth.
  • I don't post much we are in the transition from EPing to FFing and I found that if I made te formula bottle slightly warmer than his normal BM bottle he took it SO much better! I am slowly tryin to make it cooler and cooler but he has been doing really well that way. Definitely prefers BM to formula tho

  • (I'm rooting for Lexie to magically scarf down whatever you give her today.)

I voted for trying straight-up formula again just in case she wasn't hungry last night, but here is what I'd do:

1.) Have a one-ounce bottle of BM on standby.

2.) Try 2 ounces of pleasantly warmed formula.  If she doesn't take it, at least you'll have only wasted one scoop.

3.) Give her the BM to see if that's what she wants instead.  If so, give her three more ounces of BM with just a little bit of formula powder sprinkled in (for taste).

4.) Try gradually increasing the formula-to-BM ratio, if you have enough BM to do so.

    Good luck!!!

  • When I transitioned my first LO to formula she wouldn't take it. I had to mix the BM and formula and slowly eliminate the BM. It took about a month for her to take straight formula. I know this isn't your first choice but it was the only thing that worked for us. Good luck.

  • You will want to slowly transition. I started out 75/25 for 5 days then did 50/50' then 25/75. I switched from gerber regular to gerber soothe without slowly transitioning thinking it wouldn't be a problem. She was not a happy camper digestively speaking for about a week.

  • Ok, well, that was interesting. The formula rejection last night definitely wasn't a fluke.

I started out offering her just formula- she wasn't having it at all.

So I mixed 3 oz BM with 1 oz formula, and she still wouldn't take it.

She ended up taking a little over half a bottle of 1 oz formula to 4 oz BM. Sad to waste the BM, but I guess it is what it is. I'll keep giving her 4:1 bottles until she's used to it. The gagging will eventually stop, right? Anyone?

  • Well, at least she ended up taking something. #:-S

As for the gagging, don't they say that it takes 10 tries before your taste buds really "know" whether they like what they're tasting?  Maybe? Hopefully?

I have a silly question (but don't think it warrants its own separate post). I'm going to start switching my LO to formula soon too. When you mix formula with breastmilk, does the BM take the place of the water you would normally use? For example, for a 4 oz bottle, if its 2oz BM and 2 oz formula, do I use 4 oz of BM really (mix 2 oz with the formula) or is it 2oz BM, plus 2oz formula mixed with water?

I think I just confused myself more. Hope that question makes some sort of sense...

ETA - never mind I just googled it. Formula with water and add breastmilk, but it's not recommended to mix together in the same bottle since BM keeps longer than ff and if your LO doesn't ear it all you have to throw it all away... Allie I would try a different brand (that's how I voted).

  • I had to mix them, slowly over a months time when I stopped pumping. I also found that she preferred the formula really warm. She hated Enfamil, didnt really like the blue Similac, but likes the Organic Similac. I tried to switch to powder, but she hated it, so I buy the quarts of ready-to- feed. Picky little boogers.
