Potty training: Switch from naked to underwear?

For the last month we have been doing great with potty training at home, as long as my son has nothing on from the waist down. He will stop playing, run to the potty and hasn't had an accident that way in weeks. The problem is as soon as I put on a pull up, underwear, or just shorts he has an accident. I tried doing every 10-15 minutes having him pull them down and sit on the potty, but he would still pee himself after a while. Any suggestions on the transition? He is 2.5 years old, and I'm a stay at home mom/private nanny for another 2 year old girl (who is rocking the potty training!). Thank you!

  • I'm also a SAHM and watch another LO, it's the best of both worlds I think :)

Anyway, the only suggestion I would make would be to ditch the Pull-Ups during the day, it's basically a diaper with a fancy name.  Have you tried underwear for a couple of days straight?

  • I tried underwear for 2 days, he peed in them every time. Even when he would sit on the potty every few minutes :-/

  • I'm going through similar situation, with my daughter who is almost 3. Something another mom told me yesterday was that they went out and let their toddler pick out the underwear of choice, and if it's a character they really like, like Superman for instance, they won't want to have an accident on Superman, and get him dirty with pee or poop. It seemed to really devastate my friend's son when he made Scooby Doo dirty.
Best of luck! Veronica :)Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker

  • It takes more than 2 days for some kids, esp because he's young still. Either keep trying (and know that you're going to clean up a lot of pee for a few days/weeks) or back off for a few months and wait until he's ready.

  • Thanks everyone! Any progess is good progress right?
