Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Miscarriage and question about trying again

Hello!

I experienced my second miscarriage last week, at a little over 5 weeks along. I had my first miscarriage in 2011, and had a D&C, this time I miscarried naturally and was able to confirm through ultrasound that I passed everything.

When I had my D&C a few years back, the doctor told me to wait 3 months to TTC again so that my uterus could fully heal (we did, and I was pregnant again 3 months later). This time, the doctor. told me to wait one full cycle so that we can easily date the pregnancy. Aside from that, he voiced no concerns about trying again immediately. While I normally err on the side of caution and listen to what the doctor tells me, this time I'm leaning toward trying again immediately if the only reason to wait would be to date the pregnancy.

What are your thoughts?

Re: Miscarriage and question about trying again

  • I'm sorry to hear about your losses, but I think you should listen to your doctor's advice. One cycle isn't long and you should be on the safe side.

  • I echo PP. From the blood loss you could have lower iron levels which can in turn decrease chances of healthy pregnancy. Dating is also important for monitoring. I'm so sorry for your loss. But, I believe nobody hear will tell you anything but to listen to your doctor. I know it is so frustrating, but you wouldn't want to risk another miscarriage and then start back over. I was disappointment we were told first cycle, then bumped to second cycle at f/u b/c of complications for D&C, BUT I will do EVERYTHING in my power to have a healthy baby. If you were to get pregnant right away and God forbid something happen i would be afraid you would never forgive yourself. When you are ready jump over to TTCAL and lurk, read the top two sticky threads and then post a proper intro. You can join he TTA (trying to avoid) check in for ladies who are benched for various reasons and can hopefully relate to others. GL on your journey!

  • I'm sorry for your losses! I think you should listen to your dr and wait at least the one cycle. You can always wait longer if that makes you nervous. I think the difference in waiting periods has to do with having a d&c vs natural. Best of luck!

  • @callalilly323  I posted this same question about 5 weeks ago when I had my D&C.  I agree with PP above to listen to your doctor about waiting one cycle.  I still haven't gotten my first AF since the miscarriage and I'm driving myself crazy.  Definitely use the women here and at TTCAL for support!!

  • Thanks ladies! I think I'll intro over at TTCAL :) I'm sorry any of us have to be here, but it's nice to be able to get support from people who have been through it.
  • I'm sorry to hear about your losses.  If your doctor is comfortable with one cycle after a natural miscarriage then I would go ahead and follow that advice.  I personally think one cycle after a natural would be okay and would feel comfortable ttc again after that.

  • My doc told me today that waiting one cycle is recommended and that any more than that doesn't really impact anything.  The one cycle is recommended (but not always required) to help 1) date the pregnancy and 2) help to ensure it's not a molar pregnancy.  My doc also mentioned that he and his wife got PG immediately after a MC (as did 4 of my friends).  Not sure what's "right", but that's what I was told.

  • He didn't explain but he did confide that he and his wife struggled with miscarriage and loss. Being not only an ob and a father and husband who has personal experience with this, I trust what he says. I have my follow up in another week, I hope to have some more insight

  • I would say definitely listen to your doctor.  I had a miscarriage in August with my first pregnancy.  My doctor told me to wait one cycle then I could try again.  I followed doctor's orders and we got pregnant on our first try after that cycle.  I miscarried that baby at almost 6 weeks.  I am now seeing a RE and he recommended waiting at least two months to try again because I probably tried again too early.

^^^^^ is not always true. I miscarried in July, waited a cycle - got pregnant and had a miscarriage, so I would tend to disagree that you are less likely to miscarry.

  • I read an article posted by web MD. The researchers from Duke posit that trying immediately after miscarriage is safe. In fact, they assert that trying within 6 months after a miscarriage reduces the risk of another miscarriage. https://www.webmd.com/baby/news/20100805/study-no-need-delay-pregnancy-after-miscarriage?page=2

On another note, I'm sorry for your losses. I'm going through my first one now :/
  • My doctor said he just wanted to see my levels go down to 0, and then we could start trying. So we didn't wait for my next period. It took me 8 months just to get that BFP. I also ovulate late, and didn't lose much blood during the MC so I'm not concerned about my lining. I probably won't get pregnant this cycle anyway. But I also temp/chart so I know exactly how to date the pregnancy, too.

^^^ I have also heard your chance of miscarrying falls slightly if you get pregnant quite quickly after a mc, however 4 months after my last mmc, I had another. I don't know if I just had really bad luck and wasn't in the majority of people who go on to have a normal pregnancy, or if this fact is untrue or not. However, I have read that one or even a few miscarriages doesn't increase your chance of a miscarriage in future pregnancies.

  • My Dr told me to wait for one more cycle as well.   My acupunturist told me to wait 3 months.   Either way, I have a chance to get pregnant again this month since I Oed last weekend and I had unprotected BD on Sat (I thought I already ovulated).   My Dr told me to use protection and we just didn't.   We stopped Bd-ing the moment I found the OPK turned positive but the possibility it's still there.

I am emotionally healed and ready but now I'm anxious.  Though after this experience, I think if I do get pregnant again, I will not be as enthusiastic as before...not until I pass certain months.  I also did my introduction to TTCAL as well.
