When to tell work...?

So I work full time and just found out I was pregnant with # 2. With my first I was in a position where I could bring him to work once he was born so there was no concern with "when to tell" my boss. Now I work for a small company and my lo goes to a great educational daycare. I know my legal rights, since my job doesn't offer benefits or any kind of paid maternity leave. But when do I actually TELL them I'm pregnant. At first I was thinking wait, wait, wait. We're in a slow season and baby-to-be isn't due until the start of our "summer slump" (we're super busy in the spring). Things pick up in February and get rather hectic for about 5 months. At first I was thinking, right before the busy season starts. But now, honestly, I'm not even sure I will be able to hide my morning sickness. Especially since with my first I had a week or two of horrible vomiting. (I actually worked on my laptop in the bathroom one day...)

So the question is: When do you tell your work you're pregnant?

Re: When to tell work...?

  • I've waited until the second trimester with both. If you need special accommodations, you may want to tell them earlier, but if you can make it through without saying anything (perhaps covering with a nasty "stomach flu"), why not wait?

  • I waited until I was 13 weeks as well. I work for the school district in my town and it coincided with my first day back at work from summer break.
  • I'm a teacher and was super tired and having morning sickness, and didn't want my principal coming in wondering why I was being such a lazy teacher. I told him around 7 weeks. Another reason was because of dr. appointments, which are hard to make when you can't just leave your job.

  • I'm planning on waiting until after the holidays for myself.
  • I waited until the end of my first trimester, after I had a sonogram for genetic testing and we knew the pregnancy was going as planned.  I was very paranoid the first trimester that something would happen to the pregnancy, and I didn't want to have to tell people if there was an issue.  I like my coworkers, but I don't have the type of relationship with them where I tell them about every little thing going on in my life.

If I had had horrible morning sickness, I would have had trouble hiding it, and I would have told earlier.  But I think there is an advantage to waiting to tell coworkers (and non-close friends).

In the end, the two coworkers I work with the most suspected, I think because I stopped drinking diet soda all day long!

  • There's no right or wrong answer. I was hoping to wait until after bonus season (in December) but in the end I told at 17 weeks (a month earlier) when I thought I was starting to show. In the end, it didn't affect my bonus at all.

  • With both of my pregnancies I waited as long as possible.  I just told my boss about this PG yesterday, when my one friend at work who knew already said "you really need to say something about your PG."  Because it is definitely obvious.

I think it's a personal decision though - I can understand why some people tell sooner if they are very sick or have a lot of appointments, etc.

  • Thanks for the input ladies! I think I will have to tell them after my first Dr appt this Wed. I've been on an off throwing up for the last few days so I'm pretty sure they'll all figure it out by the end of the week if I don't say anything! :) It will definitely be earlier than I wanted but this baby is really kicking me in the gut with the nausea! It's nothing like my son, when I was pregnant with him my nausea was there but very manageable and I only got sick enough to throw up for a few days during hormone peak week 9. :) I hope that means this one's a girl! ;) Thanks again!
