Do you get your car serviced?

We are supposed to get our car serviced every 15,000 miles. The last time we did was at 60k miles and it cost us $600. I know we need an oil change and tires rotated but how important is it to get all the other stuff they do? It seems like a lot every 15k. Just curious what others do

Re: Do you get your car serviced?

  • My husband just does it himself once a year.

  • We take ours in every 3000 for the oil change and they check everything else while they are at it and top off all the fluids. Its only like $15 or $20.

  • DH does our oil changes himself. It's super easy... you have to buy a few supplies, but it really pays off. If your DH is the kind of person who'd be into doing something like that, you could suggest it.
And we get our tires rotated at the Costco service center every year-ish b/c they definitely have the best price in our area.

  • I get my oil changed every 5K like I am supposed to at the dealer.  They always let me know when something needs to be done.  Change air filter, rotate tires, add fluids..stuff like that.  I don't ever actually take my car for a "service" like you are referring to.  I bought my car at 28k and it has 74k, only take it to the dealer it came from and they never told me I had to.

  • Yes. Makes the car last longer.
  • Yes, every 15K miles. If you ever want to resell the car, it's important to show that you've maintained it properly.
  • DH does all auto maintenance for us.

This. What are you getting done that costs $600?!?

  • I bring mine in every 4,000 for an oil change as recommended and then they do the routine maintainence that's required at that interval.  Some mileage markers require more work than others.  IMO $600/year (plus oil changes?) is a small price to pay to know your car is in good working order.  I figure any repairs/upkeep that is needed is far less than a new car payment so I keep things in working order.
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

  • We do. My husband knows enough about cars to know when someone is lying to him, though. So we've never worried about being ripped off. FIL also knows how to do a lot of the work himself so we sometimes ask him if it's necessary or a good price. It also makes the car last longer so it is worth the money IMO.

  • Yes, I take it in more or less when my reminder comes on in my car.  I've stopped going to the dealer and now go to local service stations.  Bigger scheduled repairs can run a few hundred dollars.  Just oil and fluid changes are significantly less.

I plan on keeping this car for a long time so I like to keep up with the maintenance on it.
  • I got free oil changes and filters when DH bought me my Jeep. On his truck they are $90 but he bought the service card which makes them $20. Even after buying the service card, its still much cheaper than paying full price. But on DHs work car he does the oil changes himself. Other than that and inspections, he does everything else himself.
  • We only take it into the shop every 20,000 kms, but we do routine oil changes (either ourselves or at superlube if we are lazy) every 5000 kms.  When we go to superlube they check our filters and fluids and whatnot and if something needs replaced, we usually go out and buy the part ourselves and replace it ourselves.  Every oil change is about $75 at superlube, but it's only every 4/5 months.  It's about $20 to buy the stuff and do it ourselves.

Tires are rotated and changed every May/October when we switch from summers to winters and vise versa.  We just took our SUV in for a tune up, we've had it for just over 20,000 kms now, and we knew we needed new brakes, so that's getting done now too, along with some other stuff we can't do on our own.

  • My dad does it for DH and I, we're both hopeless at those things, and I'm a bit afraid of mechanics.

  • There is a whole list of what they do but I think it's a lot of BS. We will do it though just because we want to keep it until it dies out. We keep cars forever so I guess it's worth it.
  • I take it in whenever it tells me. I'm not sure how many kms that is between each service.
  • Yes, my DH likes to change the oil and do all that himself, but it never seems to turn out well.  I just take it in and let the experts do it.  Whatever they say needs done (within reason), I just pay for it.  It's never been over maybe $60 though except when I actually needed 4 new tires (eep.)
