Hi Ladies! I have my first apt tomorrow.. FINALLY! And Im curious about the ultrasound.. I have that first and then meet with the doc. Will the tech tell me if things  look ok? Or will I get the" The doc will go over the ultrasound with you".... That's the worst... I guess im just anxious to know.. of course!... Also, at 9 weeks, do you think they will need to do an internal ultrasound? Just curious...  Thanks for any input!  :)

Re: Ultrasound tech tight lipped? *update*

  • I have my first appt tomorrow too! This is my second baby but I'm anxious as well. With my first I had an ultra sound at 8 weeks and the tech let me know what everything was and how everything looked and what she was looking at/for. I met with the doc first then had the US so it might be different for you. It was an internal one because they told me the baby was too small for a regular one. My advice would be to ask questions, ask anything, they see pregnant people all the time and if this is your first then you have no clue whats going on! Good Luck

  • I've never had a tech tell me anything (I had 8 ultrasounds with my first) other than that my LO had flipped from breech to vertex, but that was pretty obvious and she basically just agreed with what I was saying.

  • My doctor always does the first one. The tech that works at my doctor's office has her PhD in whatever it is they are trained in. Typically they don't have that type of schooling. Not sure if this is why, but I assume because she is highly trained, she feels comfortable saying whatever she sees. I had a cyst or something and she was like, "It's a blah blah blah and it measures blah. They'll do blah to fix it. The doctor will answer questions." LOL. Most techs don't breathe a word about anything as far as I know.

  • It really depends on the tech.  I have been to one who is all business and won't say anything really, and been to another who shows/tells what everything is.  She even pointed out my SCH on Friday, and told me to not be too concerned about it as they see it all the time.  Honestly, I like the more open one a lot better.  She makes me feel less concerned.  The tech that is always tight-lipped makes me feel a lot more nervous.
  • I had an ultrasound 11 years ago... I know.. its been awhile.. So Im a little out of what happens now.. but I don't really remember much of what was said... I ended up not having the baby... another story... so Ive only had that one and only. Im going to The Brighams so it will be interesting to see how they do it. You know its just difficult when you've been waiting for what seems like forever already!
  • LAL~ Good luck tomorrow too! I was trying to respond to you but I don't know how... Im a total bumpie dummy... ;)
  • Agree with the above that it can go either way depending on the tech. Regarding abdominal vs vag, I have had u/s at 6w6d and 8w1d. The tried abdominal first for both and could see the hb that way for both. They did move to vag for the 6w6d one but I was weird and they couldn't see much that way. Didn't need to try vag for the 8w one. GL!

  • You're right... I have no problems with a chatty tech... It would make me a lot more comfortable.... Its a quiet one that will make me nervous...

  • Here it is regulated - they cannot tell you a lot of things - their job is to take the measurements/pictures and a Dr does the explaining. At any u/s I've had they would show me where baby is, and tell me what they were measuring, but for some of those I had to ask.
Typically they do their thing, then have a dr review the images, then they will let you know if the dr neds to speak with you or if you are good to head home.
It is a liability thing, from what I understand.
  • My techs have always told me what was going on...whether good or bad.  I would assume they would do an internal this early.  good luck!

  • I had an ultrasound last week and ended up measuring 9w1d. (I wasn't sure of dating for my LMP.) I only had an abdominal ultrasound, and the tech pointed out the heartbeat and talked about dating and size.

During my first pregnancy (which ended in miscarriage), I saw the heartbeat at the first u/s then nothing at the second. The tech was chatty the first time, but that time didn't say a word, so I knew what was coming. That was awful.

I hope you get good results!

I know the techs can't say much, but mine was able to point out the heartbeat and tell me how big the baby was measuring. She also told me that my ovaries looked fine and pointed out the placenta. I guess she was on the chatty side. The next day the doctor told me everything was good and confirmed the due date. When I had it I was 9 weeks exactly (by LMP, which they're using, I'm using O date so I might have been a few days shy of 9 weeks really) and I didn't need it the be transvaginal, she tried abdominal and it worked.

    Good luck!

  • I had a trans-vag one at 5 weeks and a abdominal at 7 weeks.
  • Tech's won't say anything more then to point our the heartbeat and head and stuff like that.  It isn't their job.  They aren't trained to interpret the ultrasound just preform them.

I have never had a trans-vag ultrasound and the last two pregnancies I had ultrasounds to date the pregnancy...didn't have one this time.  Everything was abdominal.  I know they asked me to have a full bladder when I went in for mine though....that was a pain.  All that poking with the wand and a full bladder!

  • At my last I had an US at 7 weeks. It was vaginal. The tech showed me after she took her measurements the heart beating and gave me a picture.

Had another us at 9 weeks due to some bleeding US tech showed me heart beating again and have me another picture.
The next week at 10 weeks I went in and she said your back. She was nice she said I might want to check w my insurance to make sure they will cover the US since I just had one.

Dr was making sure since he tried Doppler on my belly and ultrasound on my belly and didn't see anything. Still early for belly.

When the US tech did her measurements, she then asked me f I knew the way out I said yes and she left. She always would show me the heart flickering and would give me a picture this time nothing.
I knew something was wrong. Went and talked to Dr. No heartbeat.

  • Just wanted to chime in that I've had varying experiences. With my a/s for my son - she said NOTHING but got a call later that they were concerned about a soft marker for Down's syndrome.

For my last two pregnancies (both miscarriages with several u/s), the tech was really chatty and helpful. I preferred to know ASAP, even when the news was really hard.

    Good luck!

  • When I had my scan last week, the tech didn't say much. She said my doctor would be in touch. When I tried asking for more info, she said that she didn't think I should worry. I have to admit it is so hard just waiting for the doctor to be in touch.

I didn't even get a picture from the one last week. Hopefully this coming week we will.

  • I have never had anyone but my Dr do my ultra sounds while I'm pregnant. I don't think I'd like a tech doing my ultra sound. The only time I've had a tech is whenI had cyst and they never tell me anything.
    Fucking bump!!!!
  • My Dr. did mine at 8w3d (internally) my DH was in the room the entire time screen facing us and talked us through everything that was happening and what she saw and was doing. We have had 1 loss before so she knew I was nervous.. She made the whole experience very pleasant and gave us each a picture to keep after.

I had my ultrasound last Wednesday. The Tech pointed out the heart, let us hear it, told us what the beats per minute were and said that it was perfect. She didn't say anything else.

I was 7 weeks 3 days...she tried to do an abdominal ultrasound but couldn't get a clear enough image to do the measurements so she did a internal one.

  • So I had the best/emotional day yesterday :) Hubby and I went in to BWH and had such a sweetheart of a tech.. probably 10 years younger than me!! but that's OK ;) She showed us everything.. There is a screen right infront of her and a tv to the left on the wall so we could see everything.... Baby is nice and healthy.. brain is developing and we saw the heartbeat... It really is a miracle isn't it? Measuring 8.8cm and im 8w6d today.... Thanks for all the input ladies! Heres to healthy babies and mommies..... xo
