UPDATED: A couple of NTTCALR questions

Morning girls! I have a couple of questions for ya.  1. Since I am now serious about getting into better shape, what day is the Healthy Living thread posted?  2. And also, is it better to eat before or after a lunchtime workout?   Today will be my first day at the gym and I'd like to begin the Couch to 5K on the treadmill.  Thanks for your input and/or suggestions!  Looking forward to beginning a new healthier life TODAY!  Hugs to everyone in need!

UPDATE: I did it!  Day 1 of C25K...done.  Tomorrow some very light strength training then Day 2 on Wednesday!

Re: UPDATED: A couple of NTTCALR questions

  • Hi Quig!!

I try and eat after a workout. I find it makes it easier for me. If I try and work out on a full stomach I just don't feel as well throughout. Although, I do try and have a snack right before for a little extra energy.

Best of luck to you!!! Enjoy the Gym!

Thanks PC! I think I'll try that today and see how I feel.  :)

  • I agree with @pink camino that if I eat more than a light snack before a workout I feel super full and miserable. I usually grab a banana or eat a few crackers with peanut butter at least 30 minutes before I workout or run. Have fun today!!
  • I agree with PC. Eating before a workout does not agree with me.

  • I like to have a light snack a couple of hours before I work out, so my stomach doesn't feel full, but I'm not starving.  And then I will usually eat an hour or so after I work out.

  • Eat lunch after, but make sure you eat a good breakfast or a snack a few hours before. Working out hungry is also not a good idea. Have fun today!

  • I have to eat something light about an hour before a workout. I usually eat a banana, or something similar. A little more if I'm doing a hard workout or long run. This is to ensure I have enough fuel in the tank. But if it's your first day of c25k, you'll be fine with something light! Eating less than an hour before a workout makes me nauseous during the workout.

You should definitely eat afterwards. You need to replenish your energy stores. It's important to make sure some of what you eat post-workout is carbs.

  • If I have eaten a full meal, I wait about 1 to 1.5 hours to workout (depending on what I'm doing--cardio def wait 1.5 hours).  If you are just going to snack, a banana or cracker with pb are very good snacks for energy purposes. Make sure that you eat within one hour of finishing your workout!

  • After! You will burn the meal instead of calories! Your after workout meal should contain protein to help increase the benefits from you workout! If you need to war breakfast first I agree a banana, light yogurt, or a scoop of peanut butter then wait about 30 minutes. Good luck on your journey! Keep us posted!
