3rd Trimester

Stomach issues/not sleeping

I just entered the third trimester today, but for the last two weeks or so I have felt awful!  There is hardly anything that sounds good to eat, it seems that everything makes my stomach hurt.  It's almost like I am in the first trimester again when I only wanted plain foods and had zero energy.  I am usually up for at least an hour every night battling heartburn or I cannot get comfortable enough to sleep.  I've tried sleeping in a recliner and on the couch because our bed is just not comfortable to me anymore.  I have had zero motivation to cook or clean and I feel like a crappy wife.

I have my glucose screening on Wednesday so I'm planning to talk to my midwife then but I am just looking for suggestions to calm the heartburn and maybe some ways to get to sleep more comfortably.

  • I sleep on the couch too, way more comfy to me! As far as heartburn, I've found that chewing gum really helps! And, if you chew peppermint gum, it'll help alleviate your upset stomach too! Feel better, you're almost there! :)

  • Lot of people on my BMB and my OB told me to take a Pepsid with dinner. I take 1 - 10mg and it changed my life!! As for food ad versions and an upset tummy no experience, just eat what sounds good. Also, prepare to just get more and more tired ;)

Thanks I've heard peppermint tea is good too!

  • I have been taking Zantac 150 for heartburn and it works! I don't know what I would do without it.It is a category B pregnancy drug. My doctor told me it was fine to take. Good luck!
  • My OB suggested Zantac for the heartburn, but I have found if I avoid spicy, or acidic foods before bed I don't get the heartburn. I'm having the same problem with getting comfortable at night. I take a long bath to relax and it usually helps...for a while. Try sleeping on your side or with a body pillow...I've heard that works great too.

I think the Mexican food I had for dinner might have been the culprit, although it was not spicy or deep fried so I'm not 100% sure.  I have had to learn to avoid fried foods and spicy stuff even if I love them, my body does not right now.  I sure miss my hot wings lol

  • I live on gaviscon! I drink it after ever meal and every drink, even water.
I hear you on the food thing. I had hg at the start, and still struggle some days. There is just no room! I make sure I add extra calories to things to make sure I am getting enough, eg. Extra olive oil and cheese in mashed potatoes. Smoothie with mango, pineapple and extra think coconut cream + coconut oil.
Don't worry if you lose a little weight, baby will take calories from you. Just try really hard to get it back up the next time. (I'm terrible at this. I lose 10lb, gain 10lb, lose 10lb, gain 10lb. Midwife has not been worried because overall I am up about 12lbs, but she insists on gaining more these last few weeks. Adding fat to everything is really helping.)
  • My instructor in our birthing techniques class suggested Papaya Enzyme tablets for heartburn/indigestion, due to some women taking so many Tums that can (over time) lead to kidney stones.  Plus I like the idea of something more natural to try and I have to say, they do help, and taste yummy.  I couldn't find them in the CVS or Walgreens locally, but did find them on Amazon.

As for the uncomfortable-ness, I'm in the same boat, although farther along.  I'm due in 2 weeks and feel like I haven't slept in 3 days.  I've tried sleeping on my sides, back, anything.  And listening to my husband sleep makes me want to suffocate him with my pillow since I'm so crabby from not sleeping.  I've thought about sleeping in our spare bedroom just for a change to see if that helps, I know our sofa isn't comfortable enough for me at this stage.  I feel very sorry for my co-workers cause I know I'm not pleasant!
