Hind Milk

How do I know if LO is getting enough hind milk? He only nurses for maybe 5 minutes, and then he is done. He's happy, satisfied, and I feel empty. Could he just be a really efficient eater? Five minute just doesn't seem long enough.

  • He could be efficient but 5 mins is pretty quick! If he is gaining and has a good amount of wet/poopy diapers that's always the best way to tell. My LC also said that when poop is more yellow/orange than green this indicates adequate hindmilk consumption so check out the color for the next few days. If it's consistently more green than yellow he could be getting too much foremilk.

  • Thank you. He had his 4 month check up today and he is gaining okay. He is a little below his curve but the pedi wasn't concerned at all. He's very active and poops about 6-7 times daily, it's always the yellowish color. Thanks again, I guess he's just a quick eater.

  • DD went through a phase from 1-3 months where she only wanted to eat for 5 minutes at a time.  Around 4 months she started nursing for 10-15 again.  They're pretty good at figuring out what they need from the boob.
