How sunken is too far?

DD2 has been sick. She threw up on me around 5am and has been very sleepy/not eating well all day. I'm keeping an eye on her fontanel for dehydration. Her fontanel is depressed slightly but definitely not what I would consider "sunken". What's the determination of "sunken"? I'm also watching her diapers.

Re: How sunken is too far?

  • How many wet diapers has she had today?

I think a sunken fontanel would indicate pretty severe dehydration? (FWIW, they're always a tad bit "in" vs the rest of the scalp.)

  • Not exactly sure how sunken is "sunken." If she's not peeing, not making tears, or her mouth is dry, have her seen.

  • We went to Urgent Care this afternoon and we were told it would be very noticeably sunken. I however figure I would rather be safe and go in. Logan starting throwing up last night around 630pm and continued until about 1030 then slept on and off and really hasnt eaten much still but he hasn't thrown up since about 330 this afternoon so hoping we are on the home stretch. Even with that long of time he appears to still be getting enough fluids to not be to dehydrated. That being said like I said we always feel it's better to call or go in so that we feel better.

  • She is peeing and crying tears during a meltdown just about 2 hours ago. Thanks ladies!

  • I have no advice but wanted to say I hope she feels better soon!
  • Also, a good way to get minimal fluids for a sick baby is those little sponge sticks. Toward the end of my dad's life & other people that I've looked after they have been wonderful.

You can soak the end in breast milk or formula. Let baby suck on the sponge if they are able. If they just are feeling sleepy you can swab the inside of their mouth & lips to keep them comfortable.

I used them for DD when she had the norovirus. She couldn't tolerate large sips of water or sipping from the sippy cup. So the sponge sticks were amazing.
