What to pack for lunch??

I teach 4th grade, so we only get a 30 min lunch break during the day. I am struggling to figure out what to pack in my lunch since ham sandwiches are out the window. Any suggestions?

Re: What to pack for lunch??

  • I'm also a teacher. I've found that left overs are wonderful. Also soup and salad. my favorite is to make a taco salad with left overs from tacos the night before. sometimes I'm too lazy and just buy the school lunch...

Taco salad is a great idea! I have been eating school lunches all year and cannot take one more day! Lol.

  • Protein, Carb, Fiber, Calcium.. Haha..

Meat, Crackers, Veggies, Cheese, Salad. ummmm hard boiled eggs, soups, Fruit. Idk. My doc put me on a snack program so I have to have a snack every 3 hours.. Meals arent my specialty =\
  • I pack yogurt, pretzels, soup, and granola bars.  That takes care of lunch and snacks throughout the day.  Sometimes I switch out the soup for mac&cheese or leftovers or something else random.

  • Oh man I was just wondering this same thing and I totally forgot the no cold cuts rule! Chicken is OK right? Like the grilled chicken breast at Subway?

My doctor advised me not to eat any subs from there because it is prepared on the same counter as the other meats which could contain Listeria. :-( I miss Subway so much!
  • My lunch break is constantly interrupted so I like things that are easy to reheat- soups especially. I often bring salads too. Sandwiches work pretty well if you pack them in a tupperware container and microwave them that way. I also keep a variety of frozen meals in our freezer so in case nothing else I have looks appealing I can make one.

  • I did a lot of soup and salads when I was working and pregnant with my first. I lived off lentil soup!

Oh, thanks for this! Are there other sub places that are safe, you think?

I loooooove lentil soup (and black bean soup, and broccoli cheese soup) so maybe I'll go that route, especially now that it's getting cold.

  • 1. Being pregnant and teaching at the same time sucks big giant monkey balls. The no peeing and the short lunches and the BO are getting to me.

    2. I think most people don't cut lunch meat altogether. I have ALWAYS hated cold cut sandwiches, so I've never done lunch meat at lunch, but if you really want a ham sandwich, I'd say go for it.

    3. Whoever suggested humus is right on. That's usually my go-to. I get pita chips and sliced veggies and go that route. I also do leftovers from dinner the night before and usually a piece of fruit and/or yogurt. I dig apples this time of year.

Hang in there. I know sometimes I really feel like people IRL who aren't teachers don't "get it" (DH included), in the same way that people who already have kids know that I don't "get it." It's HARD.

  • I have found that I have to just snack when I can because a big lunch does not settle well for me. I know thats tough when you have a strict lunch schedule. I am bringing applesauce, crackers, and fresh fruit.

  • Like @deepoceanmama said, teaching and being pregnant sucks.

Last time, I took peanut butter crackers for lunch for the entire first tri.  It was all I could stomach, and I figured I was at least getting carbs, protein, and healthy fat.  Some days I added a piece of fruit and/or string cheese based on how nauseated I was or wasn't feeling.  Once I started feeling better, I had took leftovers...especially soup.

  • I'm gonna miss going to subway. What do you think about getting the sub toasted? Will that heat the meat enough?
  • I always used to pan sear seasoned chicken tenders and make a wrap with the chicken, Swiss, arugula, ranch, and tomato if you like. I'd use a spinach tortilla or any kind that sounds appetizing to you, cut in half and wrap in foil. Stick it in a little lunch sack with a freezer pack or frozen bottle water and it's the perfect lunch!

  • My doctor said lunch meat is fine as long as you aren't eating rotten, expired meat lol. Id still rather be safe than sorry though so I'm staying away from it.
I'm also a teacher and no matter what I pack for lunch and how yummy it sounds in the morning, by lunch time it sounds totally unappetizing and I'm craving something different (and unhealthy).

I had an amazing listeria sandwich from subway today.

  • My go to was always a spinach salad and a yogurt. You can put the dressing on the side in a little container. Fast, easy and a good source of folic acid.

Me too! When did they start charging for double bacteria loads though? I always thought they only did that for double meat.
