Pregnant after IF

What are you reading? (Baby related)

I am the first out of my sister/cousins/etc to have a baby. While I know a lot about getting pregnant, I really don't know too much about babies! My grandma and mom are a good resource, but they're pretty opinionated on things and aren't too up to date on certain issues, so I want to get more third party neutral information.

Do you have any good books or websites that you would recommend for a complete baby newbie?

I've been reading What to Expect online and checking out Baby Center, but I'm curious what other good ones are out there.

Thanks :)

Re: What are you reading? (Baby related)

  • The first thing my inlaws told me is to throw the books out and figure it out. I Was a nanny for 2 infants and what worked for one did not work for the other. I don't have any books but I wanted to throw out there to be open about a lot because some parents find something that sounds like great parenting but doesn't work for their child and it gets very discouraging. So I just wanted to say good luck with your reading and I hope you find a few different styles of parenting so you can have some back up plans. There are so many different ways to parent it can be overwhelming but you'll know what is right. That's why I stopped researching there is just so much out there lol

  • @MWhigham22 - that is so true! It's very overwhelming. Is it weird to just have the mindset of "I'm just going to go with my gut and do what feels right" ? Because that's kind of where I'm at right now. I just want to make sure I'm not missing something really important, like not to eat something in particular or what test is for what, etc. I guess more the technical things than the actual parenting style things, if that makes sense :)

  • Oh my OB gave my a million booklets on that kinda stuff and I haven't even made a dent. I told her I wanted to BF so she gave me like a bag of books and said "here's some to get started ill give you more near your delivery" lol it's crazy well good luck, maybe your OB might have reading material.
  • Thank you! I'm hoping they give me some reading material too. It's so weird being in this in-between place with the RE/OBGYN. My RE has given me no information about actually being pregnant, other than to stay on pelvic rest. All the other stuff I've been putting together is courtesy of Dr Google, haha! Ah well! :)

  • I recommend Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Newborn by Penny Simkin. It's a wonderful resource. I'm also reading The Birth Partner with my DH to think ahead and begin planning for birth. I haven't gotten to baby-focused books yet, but those two are a good place to start.

  • I'm reading baby wise, to learn about parent directed feeding and getting a baby on sleep schedule. So far it's interesting, but I think if we follow it we will be very flexible with it. Although and 8 week old sleeping through the night seems pretty amazing. Aside from What to Expect, that's all I've picked up.

  • With my first, I loved Bringing Home Your Newborn and Baby411.  The Big Book of Birth gives non-biased information on all types of birth situations so you can be prepared for whatever.
I follow more of an instinctual/attachment parenting model, so my favorites for raising kids are Dr. Sears books, No-Cry Sleep Solution (past age 6 months), and Peaceful Parent (Dr. Laura Markham).

  • I am a pediatrician and since this will be my first baby I haven't gotten to try these out on my own yet, but I always recommend Baby 411.  It is written by a really brilliant MD but is easy to read.  I am not a fan of the Dr Sears book because he makes things up sometimes.  What to Expect in the First Year is supposed to be good too.  And healthychildren.org.

  • Thank you guys! Lots of good options to start downloading :-)

  • My favorite book that I read for DD was "The Happiest Baby on the Block." Actually, maybe I watched the dvd. I can't remember. Anyways, I felt that the strategies presented actually worked with our DD when she was a newborn... things like "shushing" and white noise and swaddling. She was a power sleeper (and still is!).

I need to find a book about siblings adjusting to new babies... if anyone has any suggestions. :)
